Four Long Beach City College student-athletes will be honored on Monday, February 1 at the 60th annual Long Beach Century Club Sports Night Banquet at The Grand. Mike Wilson, Chantel Dunson, Evan May, and Joanna Perone are just four among the dozens of individuals that will be recognized at the City of Long Beach's premiere sports event.
Wilson of LBCC football and Dunson from women's track & field were named the 2015 Community College Athletes of the Year.
Wilson’s record-setting season helped lead an explosive LBCC football squad that compiled a 10-2 overall record and was just one win away from advancing to the state championship final. As a freshman wide receiver, Wilson’s 80 receptions, 1,259 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns were all single-season Viking records. Wilson earned All-American honors and was named the Southern California Football Association National Central League Offensive Player of the Year.
Dunson capped on impressive first season at LBCC by winning a state championship in the triple jump. She continued to improve as the season went on and posted a season-best mark of 11.59 meters (38-0 ¼) in the state championship finals to earn gold in the triple jump. Dunson easily surpassed her previous season-best mark of 11.47 meters that was set at the Southern California Championship preliminaries.
Baseball's May and Perone of women soccer both earned the Harold Hofman Scholarship award. The $2500 scholarship is given annually to a top male and female LBCC student-athlete that excels in the classroom.
May compiled a 4-4 record with a 2.73 earned run average last spring as a freshman for the Vikings while Perone tied for the team lead with six goals and was second with 17 points for LBCC in her final season as a sophomore in the fall.
