Viking Athletic Week in Review- 10/23/2017: Volleyball on Twelve-Game Winning Streak, Football Undefeated in Conference
Football
The Long Beach City College football team defeated the Chaffey College Panthers 42-21 in their second conference game of the 2017 season. The Vikings now improve their record to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in conference. Long Beach's offense netted 247 yards in passing, while the defense totaled two interceptions and three sacks against the Panthers. Freshman defensive back Cross Poyer led the defense with 9 total tackles. Freshman defensive back Nehemiah Shelton had both interception returns for a total of 33 yards for the Vikings. Long Beach football will play again on home turf on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in their Homecoming game. To view the remaining schedule, click here.
Men's Soccer
The Long Beach City College men's soccer team fell twice this week to Pasadena City College (2-1) and to Mount San Antonio College (4-0). In the game at Pasadena, freshman defender Adrian Martinez scored the first and only goal for the Vikings. Long Beach totaled 11 shots on the Lancers' goal, but were unable to finish. In the game at Mount San Antonio, goalkeeper Andres Figueroa-Flores had six saves in 90 minutes of work. Women's Soccer
The Long Beach women's soccer team tied twice this week to Pasadena City College and Mount San Antonio College. In the first game of the week against Pasadena, Aubree Furman was the first to score in the game with an assist from Sophia Barragan. PCC shortly tied the game after Furman's goal. In the second game of the week at Mount San Antonio College, Victoria Gonzalez scored Long Beach's only goal, and was followed up with a goal from the Mounties to tie the game 1-1. Women's Volleyball
The No. 13 women's volleyball team defeated Mount San Antonio College in three sets on Friday evening. This is the Vikings' 12th-consecutive win and 20th-straight set win. Sierra Davis led the team in the game against the Mounties with 12 kills. Austin Edwards, Tatyana Umi and Josannah Vazquez all tallied 10 kills each to help the Vikings take the win. Men's Water Polo- No. 2 Men's Water Polo Fight for Win in Fourth Quarter
The No. 2 men's water polo team defeated the No. 8 Cerritos Falcons 17-10 in their fourth conference match of the season on Wednesday evening at the Viking Aquatic Complex. The Falcons were took the lead in the first quarter and held on to it until the fourth, where the Vikings powered an offensive momentum that couldn't be stopped. The Vikings struggled against the Falcons throughout the entire game. Cerritos College took control and only allowed one goal in the first quarter from sophomore attacker Myles Martinez. Then in the second quarter, Long Beach City College continued to press forward by scoring three goals from sophomores Aaron Mowl, Ian Dretzka and freshman Noah Tiu to only trail Cerritos by three goals. The Vikings pursued in the third and held the Falcons to only three goals, while scoring five more to trail Cerritos by one at the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Long Beach City College took back the lead and goalkeeper Carl Matthews had a shut out and did not let any Falcon goals go by him. Freshman center Karlo Krmek and sophomore attacker Aaron Mowl scored two goals each in the final quarter to seal the 17-10 victory. Women's Water Polo-No. 5 Vikings Surpass Cerritos in Conference Game
The women's water polo team defeated the Cerritos College Falcons 9-7 in their 7th conference game on Wednesday afternoon at the Viking Aquatics Complex. The Falcons took the lead early on, but the Viking came back in the second quarter to regain the lead and ultimately take the win. Long Beach women's water polo is currently undefeated in conference. Cerritos was the first to score in the game, but then freshman attacker Charity Lopes quickly tied the game 1-1. By the end of the quarter, the Falcons took back the lead 2-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Bennett kicked off the second quarter with a shutout and refused to let any goals land in the cage. Sophomore defender Charli Chavarria scored two goals from point, while sophomore center Victoria Johnson knocked one in from the outside to command the lead 4-2. Freshman attacker Harlie Whelan and freshman defender Stephany Velazquez scored three goals in the third and the LBCC defense held the Falcons to only two goals. In the final quarter, Velazquez scored one more goal, while Nicole Adams scored her first goal to finalize the game with their seventh-straight conference win.
