Viking Athletic Week in Review- 3/12/2018: Beach Volleyball Sweeps in Home Opener, Softball’s Cienfuegos Homers for the Win Against Pasadena

Baseball- Baseball Hangs on for One Run Win Over East Los Angeles

The Long Beach City College baseball team took the 5-4 win over the East Los Angles College Huskies in their third conference game on Tuesday afternoon at the Joe T. Hicks Field. With the win, the Vikings are 10-8 overall and are 2-1 in conference.

Freshman pitcher Garrett Rennie (2-0) from Los Alamitos High School, earned his second win on the mound with facing 21 batters, and allowing one run on four hits, while striking out three.

The Huskies were first on the board with an RBI double in the top of the third.

The Vikings picked up their offense momentum in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet to bat in freshman catcher Andrew Mugica. Berberet pulled out the bats again in the bottom of the fifth with a 2 RBI double to left field that brought in sophomore outfielder Colin Perez and Mugica once more to lead the Vikings 4-1.

Freshman first baseman Mark Stanford hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to score in designated hitter freshman David Balboa in the bottom of the seventh for the Vikings final run.

The Huskies weren't finished yet and scored three runs in the top of the eighth to only trail the Vikings by one run. Long Beach City College finished the game with the 5-4 conference win and then lost to East Los Angeles on Thursday, Mar. 8 4-5.

The Vikings played against Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday, Mar. 10 for three innings before the game got rained out. The Vikings will finish that game and play in a doubleheader at Mt. SAC on Tuesday, Mar. 13. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Softball- Cienfuegos Powers Through Pasadena City College

The Long Beach City College softball team defeated the Pasadena College Lancers 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Viking Softball Field. With the win, the Vikings increase their overall record 12-10.

Sophomore pitcher Alissa Cienfuegos (7-8) was the star on the mound with only allowing three hits, while striking out nine Lancers. She totals 76 strikeouts on the season and holds an ERA of 2.96.

Cienfuegos also shined at the dish with smashing a home run in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Vikings only run. This was her seventh home run of the season and currently boasts a slugging percentage of .794.

Cienfuegos went two-for-two in the game and also hit a double in the bottom of the third inning.

Men's Volleyball

The No. 1 Long Beach City College men's volleyball team extended their reign in the top-seed as defeated No. 7 Fullerton College 3-1 on Wednesday, Mar. 7. The Vikings won the by the sets of 25-16, 25-35, 23-25, 25-19.

The top-ranked men's volleyball team will play again at LA Trade-Tech on Friday Mar. 16 at 6 pm. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Swimming

The men's and women's swim team traveled to Cuesta College to participate in the Cuesta Invitational over the weekend.

Freshman Lindsey Mizrahi placed fourth overall in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:11.82.

Freshman Cori Reynolds also placed fourth in the 50 yard breast stroke with a time of 34.27.

Freshman Felipe Carsalade took sixth place in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 29.65 and sophomore Shaun Spalding placed second in the men's 100 individual medley with a 58.63.

The swim team will compete again on Friday, Mar. 16 in their second conference meet against Chaffey and Cerritos at Cerritos College at 12:30 p.m. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Track & Field

The track & field team traveled to Occidental College to participate in the Distance & Sprint Carnival this past weekend.

Freshman Darnelle Harris took second place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.85.

The men's team took second overall in the men's 4 x 100 m relay with a time of 42.45.

Sophomore Sherrice Pelle placed fifth overall in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.42. The women's 4 x 100 meter relay took sixth place with a time of 50.16.

Beach Volleyball- Beach Volleyball Sweeps Rio Hondo and Bakersfield

The Long Beach City College women's beach volleyball team swept Rio Hondo College (5-0) and Bakersfield College (5-0) at Granada Beach on Friday morning. After the two wins, the Vikings increase their overall record to 8-1.

Freshman Josannah Vazquez and Sierra Davis went 2-1 against the Roadrunners and then went on to sweep Bakersfield 2-0. The nail-biting match against Rio Hondo was close as Davis and Vazquez finished with a two point win.

Freshman Tatyana Tuilaii-Umi and sophomore Jordan Diaz were perfect in the sand without losing one set. Sophomore Jessica Kaeka and freshman Brooklin Mize also went undefeated through their matches in both games, while freshmen Doris Woods and Isabella Alvarez only dropped one match against Bakersfield.

The Vikings will return to action on Friday, Mar. 16 at Mount San Antonio College. The first match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
