Viking Athletic Week in Review- 4/2/2018: Men’s Volleyball Wins 16th Consecutive Game over El Camino, Beach Volleyball’s Winning Streak Snapped By Mira Costa

Baseball- Berberet Fires Off Against the Dons

The Long Beach City College baseball team took down the Santa Ana College Dons 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Viking continue on a five-game winning streak and bring their overall record up to 15-12.

Freshman pitcher Bryan Sandoval (1-1) earned his first win on the mound with two runs on six hits, while striking out two in five innings of work. Sophomore pitcher Geovani Ceballos received his first save with only allowing one hit to Santa Ana in four innings.

The Dons came out swinging in the first inning with an RBI double to center field to score in their first run. Then they scored one more on a ground out to start the game with a 2-0 lead.

The Vikings answered back in the bottom of the first with two runs from freshman second baseman Raul Gonzalez and sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet.

Berberet owned the field with going two-for-five at-bat, smashing a double in the first inning, sending off a home run in the bottom of the fifth, while also earning an RBI.

In the bottom of the third, freshman catcher David Balboa singled to centerfield for 2 RBI to bring in Gonzalez and David Rivera.

In the bottom of the fourth, history repeated itself with a 2 RBI single to center field from freshman short stop David Rivera.

Sophomore outfielder Robert Funk homered right after Berberet's 13th career home run to bring the score up to 7-2.

Gonzalez smashed the ball one more time in the bottom of the sixth to bring in freshman center fielder Danny Gill and then sophomore left fielder Aaron Fawcett finalized the score with an RBI single to bring in Rivera to win the game 9-2.

The Vikings went on to fall to the Dons on Thursday 14-4. They will play again on Tuesday, April 3 against Pasadena City College at 2:30 p.m. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Softball 

The No. 16 Vikings defeated No. 14 Cerritos College 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon. Alijah Vega, Raven Agapay, Alissa Cienfuegos, Amanda McCalip, Elena Vizcarra and Emilee Hoppe all doubled against the Falcons.

Pitcher Emilee Hoppe (6-0) reeled in her sixth win on the mound with only allowing three runs on four hits in three innings of work.

The Vikings then fell to El Camino College on Thursday 13-1. Cienfuegos hit her ninth home run of the season against the Warriors.

The softball team will play again on Monday, April 2 at Rio Hondo to make up a previous postponed game. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Men's Volleyball

The No. 1 Long Beach City College men's volleyball team keeps extending their reign in the top-seed as defeated No. 4 El Camino College 3-2 in their third conference game of the 2018 season. The Viking now are 16-0 overall and 3-0 in conference.

The Viking hung on to their win, as the Warriors took them to five set (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 15-25, 15-12). Steven Rotter proved to be an offensive threat on the court with tallying 20 kills , two assists, and two block assists. Andrew Pearson and Miller Davis were close behind him with over 10 kills each. 

Melbe Perez was non-stop as he brought in 39 assists, along with four digs. The top-ranked men's volleyball team will play again at home against LA Trade Tech at 6 p.m. in the Building Q Gym.

Swimming- Vikings Dominate in First Place Finishes At Home Pool

The Long Beach City College men's and women's swimming team hosted their first meet of the year at the Viking Aquatic Center Friday afternoon that featured the Rio Hondo Road Runners and the East Los Angeles College Huskies. Long Beach was dominant in the pool with the Vikings producing a combined total of 20 first-place showings.

To kick-off the swim meet, both the men's and women's teams took first place in the 200 yard medley relay. The women came in with a time of 2:03.04 and the men finished with a 1:49.81.

Long distance swimmer Felipe Carsalade was a solid asset for the Vikings by placing first in the 200 yard free style, the 200 yard backstroke and the 500 yard freestyle.  Breast stroker Andrew Ingram also placed first in all his races with getting a 1:08.34 in the 100 yard breast stroke and a 2:34.32 in the 200 yard breaststroke, then he went on to take first in the 200 yard individual medley with a 2:16.89.

Sophomore long distance swimmer Charli Chavarria went the distance for the Vikings with a first place finish in the 1000 yard freestyle with a 12:53.82 and also in the 500 yard free with a 6:08.65. Sophomore Lindsey Mizrahi also placed first in the 100 yard freestyle with a solid 1:00.02.

Sophomore sprinter Cori Reynolds held her own as she earned three first place finishes for the 100 yard breaststroke, the 50 yard freestyle, and the 200 yard breaststroke.

Track & Field- Pelle Leads Track & Field in the 100 Meter Hurdles at Concordia

The Long Beach City College Track & Field squad traveled to Irvine to compete in the Concordia Invite on Saturday, Mar. 31. The Viking earned some solid marks and brought in two first place finishes along with three second place honors.

Sophomore Sherrice Pelle took first place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.15. She also received first place again with her 4x100 meter relay team with freshmen Destinee Augustus, Sauriyanna Harrison and sophomore Aaliyah Abdulrahmaan with a 51.17 time.

Harrison also placed second in the 400 meter, while sophomore Erin Wilber took fourth in the high jump with 1.50 meters.

Freshman Tylor Wallace brought home 7th honors in the 800 meter run and placed second in the 1500 meter run with a 4:03.04. Freshmen long distance runners Rafael Gonzalez (16.24.16) and Moises Marquez (16.24.35) were neck in neck and placed second and third in the 5000 meter run. 

Freshman Jeremiah Ruger earned a spot in second place for the 400 meter hurdles with a final time of 56.31.

Beach Volleyball

The No. 1 Long Beach City College women's beach volleyball team fell Mira Costa 2-3, but then defeated Rio Hondo 5-0 on Friday, March 30.  Mira Costa snapped the Vikings 12-game winning streak.

The top-ranked Vikings will return to conference action on Friday, Apr. 13 against El Camino College at Hermosa Beach at 10 a.m.
