Baseball- Vikings' Six-Run Rally Falls Short to Grossmont College
Despite a six-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Long Beach City College baseball team fell to the Grossmont College Griffins 7-6 in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon at the Viking Baseball Field. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 17-14 overall, but remain 8-5 in the South Coast Conference.
Freshman pitcher Bryan Sandoval (1-2) took his second loss on the mound with three runs, only one earned, on six hits, while striking out four in six innings.
Grossmont College took control over the field as they scored seven runs by the top of the seventh inning. It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth inning that the Vikings turned up the volume.
It started with freshman shortstop David Rivera coming in with double to right field to bring in freshman designated hitter Michael Kunipo for the Vikings' first run. Freshman second baseman Raul Gonzalez was next at-bat with a single to center field to bring in Rivera.
Sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet reached first from a Griffin error, then freshman catcher David Balboa slammed a double that brought in Berberet and Gonzalez to close in on the Griffin lead 7-4.
Sophomore center fielder Robert Funk earned an RBI that brought in Balboa, and then sophomore right fielder Aaron Fawcett doubled to bring in freshman outfielder Collin Perez for the Vikings last run of the rally.
The Vikings couldn't close the gap and lost 7-6, but will return to conference action on Tuesday, April, 10 against El Camino College. To view the remaining schedule, click here.
Softball
The No. 19 Vikings defeated Compton College 13-4 on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Alissa Cienfuegos hit her 10th home run for 2 RBI to kick off the Vikings' 13-run rally in the fourth inning to win the game.
Third baseman Raven Agapay also smashed a triple to center field. Then was batted in by first baseman Julia Juarez.
The softball team will play again on Tuesday, April 10 against No. 1 Mt. San Antonio College to make up a previous postponed game. To view the remaining schedule, click here.
Men's Volleyball- No. 1 Vikings Are Unstoppable Against LA Trade Tech
The top-ranked men's volleyball team won their seventeenth game in a row against LA Trade Tech in a three-set sweep on Friday evening. With the conference win, the Vikings hold a 4-0 record in the Western State Conference.
The LA Trade Tech Beavers put up a fight in the first set and made the Vikings fight off five set points before they took their first set win 32-30. The men's volleyball team bounced back in the second and third sets by taking the Beavers 25-15 and then 25-12 in the final set.
Freshman opposite Robert Oliver boasted a .500 kill percentage for the game and had a game-high record of 13 kills. Sophomore opposite Noah Taitano was right behind him with a kill percentage of .467 and brought home eight kills, four digs and one block assists.
Sophomore opposite Marques Buggs was the star of the show with leading the team with 14 kills, two service aces and four digs. Freshman setter Melbe Perez was the leading member of the team with a game-high record of 42 assists.

Track & Field- Track & Field's Tylor Wallace Takes 1st Place in the 800m
The men's and women's track & field programs traveled to San Diego Mesa College to compete in the Arnie Robinson Twilight on Friday, April 6.
Sophomore distance runner Tylor Wallace, who is currently ranked ninth in Southern California, impressed everyone and took first place overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.85.
Sophomore thrower Jarrod Amyx took seventh place in his flight with the discus throw and ninth overall with distance of 39.25 meters.
Sophomore hurdler Sherrice Pelle earned a spot in fourth place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.25. Then Freshman Alysia Green also took fourth in the fourth in the triple jump and placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 4.12 meters.
Sophomore Erin Wilber earned a spot for herself on the podium with taking second in the high jump with a distance of 1.47 meters.
