Viking Athletic Week in Review- 9/4/2018: Fall Sports Officially Begin at LBCC

Women's Soccer- Women's Soccer Shuts out San Diego City 7-0 in Home Opener

The women's soccer team dominated the San Diego City Knights 7-0 Tuesday afternoon in their home opener. The Vikings were unstoppable on offense as they immediately took full control from the start of the game.

Freshman defender Leah Rouse was the first Viking to score in the fourth minute of the game with the assist from freshman midfielder Miranda Cazares. Cazares was then next in line with the Vikings' second goal in the sixth minute.  Then to top off the first half, freshman forward Quinn Trowbridge scored her first goal of the game in the 20th minute with a crisp ball to the back of the net.

The Vikings continued their offensive domination in the second half with two more goals from Cazares and Trowbridge. Freshman forward Brittany Caudillo scored her first goal of the game with Allison Casillas as her catalyst to extend the lead 6-0. Casillas then sealed the 7-0 win for the Vikings in the 87th minute with one more ball in the back of net.

Freshman goalkeeper Sara Larios earned to her first shutout of the season with two saves on two shots on goal.

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team defeated the Orange Coast College Pirates last Tuesday 3-0. Then on Friday, the Vikings fell to San Diego City College 4-1. Sophomore Ruben Menjivar was the solo scorer against the Knights.

Women's Volleyball- Women's Volleyball Wins Big in Home Quad Tournament

Women's volleyball defeated Palomar College in a 3-0 sweep in their home opener in the Viking Quad Tournament on Friday afternoon in the Hall of Champions. The Vikings won by the set scores of 25-9, 25-18, and 25-21.

The Vikings opened the first set against the Comets with a kill by freshman setter Kaitlyn Peterson. Then sophomore outside hitter Jessica Blakeman scored back to back points to extend the lead for the Vikings.

Blakeman took the lead for the Vikings with eight kills. Sophomore opposite Sierra Davis was right behind her with six kills, and also totaled 19 assists. Freshman outside hitter Anisa Lopez had the highest kill percentage for the game with a .545 and freshman setter Levila Iosua paved the way with four service aces.

In the second game of the quad tournament, the Vikings brought out the broom again and swept San Diego Mesa 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-14).

Freshman outside hitter Tylie Johnson came out swinging in the second game of the day against San Diego Mesa. Johnson recorded a .667 kill percentage along with her 18 kills and four service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Elsa Woods also brought her "A" game with a .750 kill percentage.

Davis totaled 10 digs against the Olympians along with two block assists. Iosua was the catalyst behind the Vikings offense with 31 assists to aid the team to their second win of the day.

Cross Country- Moises takes First Place in the Tour de Cuesta Invite

The cross country team traveled to Cuesta College last Friday to participate in the Tour de Cuesta invite. Sophomore Moises Marquez launched into his second season with a first place finish with a time of 22:07.1.

Sophomore Rafael Gonzalez placed 6th overall with a 22:23.4 time and sophomore Ruben Bramasco finished in 19th place with a 23:23.5.

Overall the team brought home fourth place with 101 points.

Freshman Dasani Zavala was the top-finisher for the women's team with placing tenth with a time of 21:07.9. Sophomore Angelica Estrada finished with an 25:29.7 and freshman Stephanie Hernandez came in with a time of 27:26.1.

The cross country team will race again on Saturday, Sept. 8 in the Fresno Invitational at Woodword Park.


Football- Vikings Dominate Grossmont 38-21 in Season Opener

The No. 11 Long Beach City College Vikings defeated the Grossmont College Griffins 38-21 on Saturday evening in Veterans Stadium in their first game of the 2018 season. The Vikings came out the gates at full speed and kept their momentum on offense until the final whistle. Freshman quarterback Drake Peabody delivered as he tossed 285 yards in the air for the Vikings.

The Vikings were first on the board with a pass from Peabody to sophomore wide receiver Patrick Lee, followed by an extra point from sophomore kicker Agustin Delgadillo.

Delgadillo went five-for-five on extra points for the game and was next up on the scoreboard to extend the Vikings lead with a 28-yard field goal at the eight-minute mark in the first quarter.

Grossmont answered back with an 11-yard run, but it wasn't enough to stop the Vikings' offense.

In the second quarter, Peabody drained a 48-yard pass to Lee for the Vikings' second touchdown. Peabody wasn't ready to hold back just yet as he took matter into his own hands to score the next touchdown and smashed through the end zone to increase Long Beach's lead to 24-7 to go into halftime.

After halftime, freshman right back Pierre Robinson caught a 21-yard pass from Peabody to continue the Vikings domination. Freshman wide receiver Jonathan Bonds was next on the board with a 9-yard pass from up top to score the final points for the Vikings.

Grossmont finally retaliated in the fourth quarter with two more touchdowns, but it didn't faze the Vikings as they walked away with a 38-21 win over the Griffins.

The Vikings will play again next Saturday, Sept. 8 at Mt. San Antonio College at 1 p.m. To see the rest of the schedule, click here.
