Viking Athletic Week in Review- 9/10/2018: Water Polo Win in Home Openers, Volleyball on Five-Game Winning Streak

Women's Soccer- Vikings Fall to the Corsairs on Home Turf 

The women's soccer team fell to the Santa Monica Corsairs 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the Viking Soccer Field. In the first half, the Corsairs scored three goals out the gate to command the lead.

Freshman goalkeeper Sara Larios had totaled three saves against Santa Monica College. Freshman Allison Casillas made her debut as a goalkeeper in the second half of the game and had one save.

Freshman Leah Rouse was a force on offense as she had two shots on goal.

Men's Soccer- Vikings Take Down San Bernardino Valley 4-2

The men's soccer team defeated the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines 4-2 on Friday afternoon at the Viking Soccer Complex. Long Beach's defense was on fire as held down the Wolverine offense to only two goals.

Goalkeeper freshman Mario DeLaTorre was a force in the cage and had four saves against six San Bernardino Valley shots for the Vikings.

The Vikings were first to get on the board within ten minutes of the game starting with a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Ruben Menjivar to sophomore forward Steven Espinoza for the goal. The Wolverines struck back to tie the game 1-1 to go into halftime.

In the second half, the Vikings were ready to finish the game with the win. Freshman midfielder Sergio Flores slammed one in the back of the San Bernardino Valley's cage to lead the Vikings 2-1. Then freshman midfielder Angel Villalobos scored the Vikings' third goal with the assist from sophomore midfielder Carlos Maldonado.

The Vikings scored once more off a free kick from a foul with Maldonado bending the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net. The Wolverines were able to strike one more goal in extra time, but it wasn't enough and the Vikings walked away with the 4-2 win.

Women's Volleyball- Vikings Shut Out MiraCosta 3-0 at Home

The women's volleyball team took down the MiraCosta College Spartans in three sets on Wednesday evening in the Building Q Gym. With the win, the Vikings advance to 3-1 overall.

In the nail-biting first set, the Vikings first took the lead over the Spartans. The Spartans trailed closely behind by two points and finished the end of the first set 26-24.

The Vikings had a rough start in the second set and found themselves down by two points to MiraCosta. They picked up their offense and tied the score 9-9 and then took over the lead with a point from sophomore Elsa Woods. The Vikings and the Spartans tied the set three more times, with the Spartans trying to get the set win at 24-24. The Vikings pushed back and finished the set with another 26-24 win.

The Vikings were ready to finish the game in the third set and brought down the Spartans 25-15. Sophomore Sierra Davis led the team with 12 kills and had a .333 hitting percentage. Freshman Levila Iosua totaled 30 assists for the Vikings and had seven digs. Freshman Lizbeth Lopez smashed three service aces for Long Beach and freshman Tylie Johnson and Elsa Woods nailed three block assists each.

Over the weekend, the Vikings traveled to Santa Barbara City College to play in the Quad Tournament. The Vikings defeated Bakersfield College 3-2, then went on to win their fifth consecutive game against Santa Barbara City College with a 3-0 sweep.

Women's Water Polo- Women's Water Polo's Brightenburg Stuns the Mounties with Four Goals

The women's water polo celebrated their first win of the 2018 season with a 13-7 stunner against the Mount San Antonio Mounties on Wednesday afternoon. This was the Vikings' first game of the season.

Freshman Sydney Brightenburg was the offensive star in the pool by leading the Vikings with four goals. She scored two in the first and second quarter. She was unstoppable against the Mountie defense throughout the game.

Freshman Samantha Martinez threw three goals in the back of the Mounties' net and also had a steal. Freshmen Alejandra Villa and Lauren Westphal smashed two goals each for the Vikings and freshmen Julia Mangandi and Karissa Qualley all scored one goal each.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cam Rosas was a wall in the cage and tallied nine saves for the Vikings.

Men's Water Polo- Men's Water Polo Brings Down Mt. SAC in Home Opener

The men's water polo team took down the Mount San Antonio Mounties 17-12 in their season opener at the Viking Aquatics Complex on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman attacker Hugo Roscio was the top scorer for the Vikings with four goals.

The Vikings battled the Mounties from the start by outscoring them 5-2 in the first quarter. The Vikings kept up the momentum with consistent scoring throughout the game. Sophomore attackers Felipe Carsalade and Karlo Krmek scored three goals each for Long Beach.

Freshmen Dusan Ivanovic, Fabio Mujica and Ivan Mercep all scored two goals each to keep the lead.

Freshman goalkeeper Seth Seaboch was a force to reckon with in the cage against the Mounties and held his own with seven blocks.

The men's team participated in the Golden West Tournament over the weekend. The Vikings defeated Ventura and Saddleback on Friday, but lost to LA Valley and Golden West on Saturday.

Cross Country

The men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Woodward Park to participate in the Fresno Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.

The men's team placed ninth overall with 230 points and held an average time of 22:59. The Vikings earned a top ten finish with sophomore Moises Marquez placing eighth with a time of 21:40. Sophomore Rafael Gonzalez was next to cross the finish line in twelfth place with a time of 21.44.4.

Sophomore Lilyanna Figueroa placed 23rd for the Vikings on the women's side with a 20:32.4 and sophomore Angelica Estrada was next up for Long Beach with a 24.29.4.

Football

The Vikings fell to the Mt. San Antonio Mounties on Saturday evening 36-43 in a nail-biting game.

The Vikings were first on the board with a 15 yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Patrick Lee from freshman quarterback Drake Peabody. The Mounties were up next with a team safety to be put on the board and then scored a touchdown with 2 minutes left in the first quarter to take the lead 9-7.

The Mounties led off the second quarter with a 38 yard field goal, but then Long Beach kicked back into full gear and Peabody smashed through a 21 yard run into the Vikings' second touchdown. Then the Mounties scored off a Vikings fumble to extend their lead 19-14. Freshman Victor Bates was up next for the Vikings with a 27 yard pass to answer back to the Mounties and take back the lead 21-19. Mt.SAC was quick to score a field goal just before halftime to lead the Vikings 22-21.

The Mounties were able to score in the third quarter, without the Vikings answering back. Freshman right back Pierre Robinson had an amazing 51 yard run to score the Vikings' final points, but the Mounties not only tied the game, they finished the fourth and final quarter with a touchdown with 1:36 left on the clock to take the win away from the Vikings.
