Men's Soccer- Men's Soccer Ties El Camino in Conference Action

The Long Beach City College men's soccer team tied the El Camino Warriors 2-2 on Tuesday evening at the Viking Soccer Field in their first South Coast Conference game.

The Vikings started out strong as they were first on the board against the Warriors. Sophomore forward Carlos Maldonado demonstrated his quick feet to the Warrior's goalkeeper, as he slid by him and tapped in the Vikings' first goal.

Freshman defender Miles Hodgson was next up for the Vikings as he utilized a free kick to blast the ball into the back of the net to put the Vikings ahead of the Warriors by two.

El Camino wasn't giving up yet and scored twice in the second half to tie and finish the game 2-2.

The Vikings will play again on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at LA Harbor College in their second South Coast Conference game at 4 p.m. To see the remaining schedule for men's soccer, click here

 


Women's Volleyball- Vikings Continues Winning Streak With 3-0 Win Over Mt. SAC

The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team took down the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties 3-0 on Wednesday evening. This is the Vikings fifth-consecutive win and 21st-consecutive set win.  With the win, the Vikings advance to 10-2 overall.

Freshman outside hitter Brooklin Mize was first to get on the board for the Vikings, followed by a huge block from sophomore middle blocker Elsa Woods and sophomore outside hitter Jessica Blakeman. The Mounties were tough at the net throughout the game, but the Vikings kept pushing back to keep the lead.

Blakeman led the team with 13 total kills and 16 digs. Right behind her on the defensive side was freshman libero Doris Woods with 15 digs. Sophomore setter Sierra Davis was on the attack the entire game with 28 assists and a kill percentage of .600.

In the third and final set, the Mounties took control over the ball and were leading the Vikings most of the set. Then in the final moments, the Vikings tied the score at 20-20, then again at 21-21. Blakeman was dialed in as she smashed a service ace to take back the lead 22-21.The Mounties scored off a Viking attack error, but then had a service error to let the Vikings crawl back in the lead 23-22.The Mounties scored again, but then freshman outsider hitter Anisa Lopez had a kill with the help from Davis. Davis then finished the game with a service ace to seal the 25-23 set win and 3-0 sweep.

The Vikings then traveled to East Los Angeles College on Friday afternoon and came home with a 3-1 win. Blakeman totaled a career-high record of 21 kills for the game. The Vikings will play again on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at LA Trade Tech College in their first South Coast Conference game. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Women's Water Polo

The women's water polo had five games this week. On Wednesday, the Vikings defeated El Camino College 22-3 in their third South Coast Conference game. With the win, the Vikings hold an undefeated 3-0 conference record.

Over the weekend, the Long Beach women's water polo team traveled to Cuesta College to participate in the Rabobank Invitational. The Vikings lost against Riverside College 10-8, and then fell to San Joaquin Delta College 11-7 on the first day of the Tournament.

On the second day of the Tournament, the Vikings bounced back with a 9-4 win against Cuesta College, but then fell to Fullerton College 14-7.

Football

The Long Beach City College football team took down the Cerritos College Falcons 46-32 on Saturday evening at the Falcon Stadium.

The Vikings were first to score with a five yard run from freshman running back Raphael Jones. The Falcons responded back with a touchdown in the beginning of the second quarter, but the Vikings were quick to keep their lead with a 22-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Agustin Delgadillo. The Falcons weren't done fighting as they scored a second touchdown to take the lead 10-13, but freshman quarterback Drake Peabody wasn't going to end the half without the lead and ran in the Vikings second touchdown 17-13.

Long Beach started the second half with a 22-yard run from freshman running back Pierre Robinson and then another touchdown by Jones to extend the Vikings lead 31-13.

The Falcons put up a 60-yard run to try and close the gap 31-19. Then in fourth quarter, the Falcons scored again and their kick was blocked by sophomore defensive back Cross Poyer.   Sophomore wide receiver Milshon Lathan was next across Falcon Territory with an eleven yard pass from Peabody to bring the score up to 39-25.

The Falcons were able to squeeze one more, but not after Robinson smashed an amazing 47-yard run as the grand finale and the Vikings went home with the 46-32 win.

The Long Beach City College football team will play again Saturday, Oct. 13 at East Los Angeles College in their first National Northern League Game.

Cross Country- Cross Country Displays Top Finishes in Downey Classic

The men's and women's cross country team demonstrated three top ten finishes over the weekend in the Coach Downey Cross Country Invitation at San Diego City College.

Sophomore Rafael Gonzalez placed 2nd for the Vikings on the men's side with a time of 21:40.9. Up next was sophomore Moises Marquez with a 22:19.2 in 4th place. Sophomore Evan Ridgeway also performed for the Vikings with a 13th place finish with a time of 24:26.1.

On the women's side, sophomore Lilyanna Figueroa came in 4th for the Vikings with a 21:11.6. This was person record from her performance last year at this meet.

The Vikings will compete again on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Highlander Invitational at UC Riverside at 8 a.m. To view the remainder of the schedule, click here.

 


Women's Soccer- Women's Soccer Shutout El Camino in First Conference Game

The women's soccer team won their first South Coast Conference game against the El Camino College Warriors 1-0 on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Vikings advance to 2-3-1 overall, and 1-0 in conference play.

Freshman goalkeeper Sara Larios earned her second shutout of the season in the cage against the Warriors and had one save.

The Vikings were scoreless with the Warriors in the first half, but then freshman forward Quinn Trowbridge smashed a laser into El Camino's net off a foul kick.

The Vikings completed the rest of the game and walked away with the 1-0 win over the Warriors. The Long Beach City College women's soccer team will play again on Tuesday, Oct.2 at LA Harbor in their second South Coast Conference game at 2 p.m. To view the remainder of the schedule, click here.

 


Student-Athlete Spotlight of the Week

 

Quinn Trowbridge, Women's Soccer

Freshman forward Quinn Trowbridge earns the Student-Athlete Spotlight of the Week honors by scoring the game-winning goal in the Vikings' first South Coast Conference game. Last Tuesday, Trowbridge utilized her foul kick to smash the shot in the back of the Warriors' net.

So far this season, Trowbridge has scored three goals, with nine shots on goal. She will resume action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at LA Harbor College at 2 p.m. in the Vikings' second conference game.

 

Raphael Gonzalez, Cross Country

Sophomore cross country athlete Raphael Gonzalez earns the Student-Athlete Spotlight of the Week honors by taking second place in the Coach Downey Cross Country Invitational at San Diego City College on Saturday.

Gonzalez finished with a time 21:40.9 and averaged 5:25 per mile. With his time, the Vikings were able to take second place in the meet with 46 points.
