Viking Athletic Week in Review- 10/8/2018: Women’s Soccer, Water Polo and Volleyball Undefeated in Conference Action

Men's Soccer- Vikings Defeat Compton College 4-1

 The men's soccer team took down the Compton College Tartars 4-1 on Friday evening for their second South Coast Conference win. With the win, the Vikings advance to 7-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference action.

In the first half, the Vikings went on the attack after the Tartars scored the first goal of the game. Long Beach came kicking as scored three goals to complete the half. The first goal was from sophomore midfielder Oskar Raymundo with the help from sophomore defender Adrian Martinez. Then freshman defender Javier Gonzalez slammed one in the back of the Tartar's net with an assist from Raymundo. Sophomore midfielder Ruben Menjivar completed the first half with a penalty goal to seal the 3-1 lead.

In the second half, freshman midfielder Sergio Flores finalized the score with one last Vikings goal and sophomore forward Carlos Maldonado on the assist to close out the 4-1 win over Compton.

Women's Volleyball- Volleyball on Eight-Game Winning Streak  

The women's volleyball team defeated LA Harbor in their second South Coast Conference game on Friday night in the Hall of Champions with a 3-0 sweep. With the conference win, the Vikings remain undefeated in conference with a 2-0 record, and hold a 13-2 overall record.

The Vikings won by the set scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-14.

Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Blakeman led the Vikings with 14 kills to help hold a strong offense against the Seahawks. Freshman setter Kaitlyn Peterson was a force on the serve as she nailed four service aces for Long Beach.

Sophomore middle blocker Elsa Woods was relentless as she held a .462 kill percentage along with eight kills, five digs and one block assists.

Freshman setter Levila Iosua and sophomore setter Sierra Davis were in total control and dialed in as they each held over 14 assists.

The Vikings brought in the conference win with ease and will play again on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Cerritos College at 6 p.m. To view the remaining schedule, click here.

 



Women's Water Polo- Water Polo Still Undefeated in Conference with Win Against Pasadena

The women's water polo team took down the Pasadena City College Lancers 15-3 in their fourth South Coast Conference game on Wednesday afternoon at the Viking Aquatic Complex. With the win, the Vikings remain undefeated in conference with a 4-0 record, and 8-7 overall.

Sophomore center Sabrina Juarez batted in the set position and led the team with four goals against the Lancers. Freshmen defenders Samantha Martinez and Karissa Qualley followed close behind her with three goals each.

Qualley and freshman attacker Sydney Brightenburg both made five-meter shots against the Lancers to help extend the Vikings' lead.

Freshman center Alejandra Villa finished the game with turning her opponent twice for front water and blasted the final goal to win the game 15-3.

The women's water polo team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 10 against Rio Hondo at home.

Men's Water Polo

The men's water polo team won four games in a row in the Riverside Invitational this weekend at Riverside City College.

The Vikings took down Diablo Valley 17-11 and Orange Coast 8-7 on Friday, and then defeated Riverside 9-6 and LA Valley 13-6.  Freshman attacker Hugo Roscio and sophomore attacker Felipe Carsalade were the top scorers for the weekend with Carsalade smashing 11 goals and Roscio with eight.

The men's water polo team will play again at home on Wednesday, Oct. 10 against Rio Hondo at 4:30 p.m. To view the rest of the men's water polo schedule, click here.

 


Women's Soccer-Women's Soccer Still Undefeated in Conference Action

The women's soccer team defeated the Compton College Tartars on Wednesday afternoon 2-0 at the Viking Soccer Field. With the win, the Vikings advance to 4-3-1 overall and 3-0 in the South Coast Conference.

Freshman forward Brittany Caudillo was the star of the show as she scored both Viking goals in the first half. Freshman midfielder Yesenia Hernandez was Caudillo's assist on the first goal and freshman forward Harmony Ntuk was the catalyst on the second goal.

Long Beach dominated the game with their offense as they four shots on goal.
