Men's Soccer- Men's Soccer Brings in Six All-Conference Selections
It was recently announced by the South Coast Conference (SCC) South Division that six Long Beach City College men's soccer players earned All-SCC South honors following a 4-1-3 conference record. Sophomore midfielder Ruben Menjivar, sophomore forward Carlos Maldonado, sophomore defender Adrian Martinez all brought in first-team accolades, while freshman defender Javier Gonzalez, freshman defender Jaelyn Agu and freshman midfielder Sergio Flores all earned second-team honors.
Maldonado earned his first-team All-SCC award after leading the SCC with 15 assists and was third in conference with nine goals. Maldonado was force on the field and would move past his opponents with ease with his quick feet.
Menjivar took home his second All-SCC first-team selection for his offensive efforts as a midfielder. He totaled eight goals this season and was the go-to for penalty goals and corner kicks. His leadership shined on the field and he led the team in a positive manner to victory.
Martinez rounded out the All-SCC first-team honors for his work as a defender. He helped maintain a strong backline and led the defenders with finesse and confidence.
Gonzalez earned second-team accolades for his effort on the backline with Martinez. Gonzalez used his physicality against his opponents to protect his area. Gonzalez was explosive and proved to be a defensive asset to his team.
Agu also reeled in second-team selection for his defensive style. He rounded out the Vikings' back row with his passion and high-energy style.
Flores finished out the selections for All-SCC with his second-team honors. This season, Flores totaled seven goals with four assists. He was a constant threat on the field with his strong style skill set.
The Vikings fell to Oxnard College 0-4 in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs last Saturday. The men's soccer team will return next season.
Women's Volleyball- No. 4 Volleyball Set to host No. 13 Grossmont in CCCAA SoCal Regionals
The No. 4/6 Long Beach City College women's volleyball team is set to host the No. 13 Grossmont College Griffins (21-5, 7-3) in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Playoffs tomorrow, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Hall of Champions.
Long Beach completed the 2018 season with a 21-3 overall record, placed first in the South Coach Conference South division and are currently ranked No. 6 in the state.
Freshman outside hitter Tylie Johnson ranked second on the conference leaderboard by averaging 3.79 kills per set and totaled 250 kills overall.
Freshman setter Levila Iosua topped the conference leaderboard with averaging 9.07 assists per set.
Grossmont College comes to Long Beach with a thirteenth seed ranking in Southern California. In their last game, they defeated College of the Desert 3-1.
Winners of the first round of the SoCal Regionals will move forward to the second round on Saturday, Nov. 24.

Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team participated in the Irvine Valley College Tournament over the weekend. The Vikings defeated American River College 90-79 in their first game of the tournament and then went on to defeat Ventura College 75-72 to advance into the Championship game of the tournament.
The Vikings then fell to Cerritos College 89-64 in Championship game. As a team, the Vikings were 87.5% on the free throw line. Sophomore guard Jamiu Akinbile led the team with 25 points and had seven rebounds.

Cross Country- Marquez Named to All-State Team in CCCAA State Championships
Both the Long Beach City College men's and women's cross country teams had athletes participate in the CCCAA State Championships over the weekend at Woodward Park in Fresno over the weekend.
On the men's side, sophomore Moises Marquez came in 25th place out of 168 participants and qualified to the All-State team with a time of 21:00.4. He was only ten seconds shy from All-American status. Marquez has been a running force the entire season and placed first in the Tour de Cuesta Invite in September. Sophomore Rafael Gonzalez placed 53rd in the race with a time of 21.33.7 and averaged a mile time of 5:23.5.
For the women's team, freshman Dasani Zavala ran a 20:47.3 and averaged 6:42.4 and sophomore Lilyanna Figueroa finished with a time of 21:27.5.
The Long Beach City College Cross Country teams will return next season.
Women's Basketball - Women's Basketball Defeats Antelope Valley in Home Opener
The women's basketball brought in their first season win on Friday evening. The Vikings took down the Antelope Valley College Marauders 54-51 in a nail-biting home opener in the Hall of Champions. With the win the Vikings advance to 1-2 overall.
The Vikings took the lead initially in the first quarter. Sophomore Imani Edmond was first on the board with a jumper with the assist from freshman Khadijah Henry. Then sophomore Rosalinda Taosoga hit her first three pointer of the game. The Vikings ended the first quarter with the 12-8 lead.
In the second quarter, the Vikings kept their lead with sophomore Kaylin Brown scoring four points and sophomore Taja Ward hitting three out of four free throws.
After halftime, the Vikings were ready for more as sophomore Naomi Winston-Ellis hit five points in the third quarter and sophomore De'Brianna Hampton took a stand at the hoop with three rebounds. In total, Hampton led the team with nine rebounds and three assists. Long Beach finished the quarter still ahead 40-33.
The Marauders tied the game 51-51 with 20 seconds left in the game. Then freshman Jasmeemah Martinez hit a free throw to take back the lead for the Vikings. Martinez led the team with 11 total points and had seven rebounds. Winston-Ellis was next on the line and made back-to-back free throws with five seconds left in the game to seal the 54-51 win for the Vikings.
The Vikings will return to action on Friday, Nov. 23 against Santa Monica College in the Ventura College Tournament at 2 p.m. To view the rest of the women's basketball schedule, click here.
