Viking Athletic Week in Review- 11/26/2018: Volleyball Falls in Second Round of Playoffs, Women’s Basketball’s Brown Makes All-Tournament Team

Women's Volleyball- No. 4 Vikings Falls to No. 5 Cypress in Second Round of CCCAA SoCal Regionals

The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team ended their season in the second round of the SoCal Regional Playoffs on Saturday evening with a 3-2 loss against the Cypress College Chargers in the Hall of Champions. The Vikings finished with a 22-4 overall record.

The Vikings started off with the upper hand as they won the first set 25-14. They totaled 20 kills off of 39 attacks to catch the Chargers by surprise. In the second set, the Vikings took control late as they were trailing 17-22 and then caught up to tie the game 22-22 and ultimately took over and won the second set 27-25.

The Chargers then started to build their momentum as they came back in the third and tied the set 22-22. They capitalized off of some Vikings errors and eventually won their first set 26-24. They then came back stronger in the fourth set and took down the Vikings 25-22. Cypress then won the final set 15-10 to take home the win and advance to the State Championships.

Freshman outside hitter Tylie Johnson led the team with 24 kills and had seven digs. Freshman setter Levila Iosua had 57 assists for the Vikings and freshman libero Lizbeth Lopez totaled 25 digs.

The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team will return next season.


Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team traveled to Cypress College last Wednesday and took down the Chargers 77-75. With the win, the Vikings are 6-1 overall.

The Vikings and the Chargers were tied 36-36 at halftime, but then the Vikings were able to outscore the Chargers 41-39 in the second half. Freshman Jace Bass led the team with 22 points and had four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Sophomore Jordan Heard was two-for-three at the three point line and totaled 17 points with four rebounds and two assists.

The Vikings will play again on Thursday, Nov. 29 against Barstow College at 7:15 p.m. in the West LA Tournament. To view the remainder of the men's basketball schedule, click here.


Women's Basketball  

The women's basketball team participated in the Ventura College Basketball Tournament over the weekend and won the consolation final.

On the first day of the tournament, the Vikings fell to Santa Monica College 57-53. Then in the second day of the tournament, the Vikings defeated Ohlone College 89-38 to advance to the next round. Long Beach then took down Laney College 80-64 and sophomore guard Kaylin Brown was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Tournament.  

The Vikings will play again at home on Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Palomar College at 6 p.m. in the Hall of Champions. To view the rest of the women's basketball schedule, click here.
