Viking Athletic Week in Review- 3/18/2019: Baseball Rallies in Conference Win, Track Brings Home Gold in Coast Classic

Softball - Vikings Win in Extra Innings Against Rio Hondo

The Long Beach City College softball team defeated the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners 2-1 in extra innings on Tuesday afternoon at the Viking Softball Field. With the conference win, the Vikings improve to 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the South Coast Conference.

Freshman pitcher Noelany Benitez (4-3) dueled against the Roadrunners for eight innings and held them to one unearned run, on five hits, while striking out five.

The Vikings and the Roadrunners battled it out for seven innings with no score. Then in the top of the eighth inning, Rio Hondo scored off a Viking error. Long Beach then came back ready to win in the bottom of the eighth with freshman short stop Jade Wittman blasting a single to left field to start the rally. Freshman pinch hitter Jaydy Machuca then got on base with a walk and advanced Wittman to second. Freshman left fielder Maria Aguilar was next up at the dish and smashed a double for two RBI and the walk-off win.

Baseball- Baseball Rallies Against Huskies for Conference Win

The Long Beach City College baseball team defeated the East Los Angeles College Huskies in an 8-6 showdown on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings improve to 12-10 overall and 6-2 in South Coast Conference play.

Freshman pitcher Julio Lopez (2-1) earned the win with only allowing the Huskies to four hits in three innings of work. Freshman Trevor Sutt (1-1) took home his fifth save of the season by holding the Huskies to only one run on three hits in the final two innings.

The Vikings were first on the board in the bottom of the first with sophomore second baseman Raul Gonzalez scoring on an error from the East Los Angeles third baseman, then sophomore third baseman Mark Stanford hit an RBI single to bring in freshman right fielder Zach Rivas to lead the Huskies 2-0.

The Huskies came back in the top of the second with two runs to tie the game. Then in the top of the fourth inning, they extended their lead with three runs to lead the Vikings 5-2.

The Vikings came back in the bottom of the sixth with another RBI single from Stanford to bring in sophomore short stop Travis Aversa and then sophomore first baseman Robert Barham scored in sophomore designated hitter David Balboa to slowly close the gap 5-4.

The Vikings rallied again in the bottom of the seventh with Aversa scoring off of a single from Barham and then Balboa coming in clutch with a double to center field to score in Gonzalez and freshman left fielder Tyler Vargas to take back the lead 8-5.

The Huskies squeezed in one more run in the top of the ninth, but the Vikings shut it down and sealed the 8-6 conference victory.

Men's Volleyball- No. 3 Men's Volleyball Defeats Fullerton in Third-Consecutive Sweep

The No.3 Long Beach City College men's volleyball team defeated the Fullerton College Hornets 3-0 on Wednesday evening in the Building Q Gym. With the win, the Vikings advance to 8-3 overall with a .727 winning percentage.

Freshman outside hitter Vinicius da Silva was on fire as he led the Vikings 11 kills and eight digs. Freshman setter Joseph Rocha recorded 32 assists at the net and had four digs and three kills.

Freshman setter Kyler Tufuga was a threat in the back court as he totaled three service aces for Long Beach. Freshman opposite Uriel Batista led the team defensively as he had three blocks at the net against the Hornets.

The No. 3 Vikings will return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 20 against Santa Barbara City College at 6 p.m. in the Building Q Gym. To view the remaining schedule for men's volleyball, please click here.

 


 

Beach Volleyball- Beach Volleyball Undefeated in Conference with Win Against Mt.SAC

The Long Beach City College Beach Volleyball swept the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties 3-0 this morning at Granada Beach in their second conference match. With the win, the Vikings improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

Sophomore Sierra Davis and Brooklin Mize took down the Mounties in two sets (21-17, 21-12) with ease, along with sophomores Kaitlyn Peterson and Elsa Woods (21-10, 21-12).

Sophomores Doris Woods and Isabella Alvarez (21-14, 18-21, 15-10) fought rigorously through their match and ultimately came out on top in the final set.

Sophomore Emma Harris and freshman Brooke Gonsalves (14-21, 21-19,15-13) and sophomores Kylee Irwin-Paz and Jessica Blakeman (22-24, 23-21, 15-12) dropped their first set, but were able to make a comeback and take home the win for the Vikings.

Track & Field- Track & Field Hold Numerous First Place Finishes at Coast Classic

The Long Beach City College track & field team competed at the Coast Classic this past weekend at Orange Coast College.

For the men's team, sophomore Darnelle Harris took home two first place finishes in the 100 meter final with 10.75 time and the 200 meter finals with a 22.07. Freshman Emari Bennet took home second place in the 400 hurdles with a 56.75 time and sophomore James Martin placed second in the triple jump finals with a 12.26 meter mark.

On the women's side, freshman Destinee Augustus placed second in the 100 meter finals with a 12.43 and third in the 200 meter finals with a 25.69. Freshman Aazalet Danage also had two first place finishes in the 200 meter finals with a 25.13 and in the 400 meter finals with a time of 1:00.77. The women's 4 x 100 relay (Aazalet Danage, Cicely Arana, Destinee Augustus, Vanessa Marchorro) took home the gold with a 49.47 finish.  Frehsman Calissa Candalot had a first place podium finish in the Javelin finals with a 34.69 meter mark.

The track & field team will compete again on Thursday, Mar. 21 in the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic.
