Softball- No. 6/12 Softball Take Down Cerritos 10-9 in Conference Action
The No. 6/12 Vikings defeated the Cerritos College Falcons in a 10-9 South Coast Conference victory on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning from being down six runs to win the conference game. With the win, the Vikings improve 16-13 overall, and 7-7 in conference action.
Freshman starting pitcher Joette Vega (7-3) earned the win in the circle with only allowing six earned runs in seven innings of work.
The Vikings started the game with short stop freshman Jade Wittman hitting a double to left field to bring in freshman center fielder Yazmin Zendejas for her first run of the game. Then freshman left fielder Maria Aguilar had an RBI single to bring in Zendejas to take the 2-0 lead over Cerritos.
The Falcons then hit a two RBI home run to tie the game in third inning. They came back stronger in the fourth inning with four more runs and two more in the fifth inning to lead the Vikings 8-2.
Long Beach wasn't ready to bow down and they brought out the bats in the bottom of the fifth inning. Zendejas and freshman catcher Jocelyn Cebedo both got on base to load first and second. Then Wittman advanced everyone with a single and then third baseman Ileana Rivera ripped a triple to start the five-run rally and score in Zendejas, Cebedo and Wittman. Freshman left fielder Maria Aguilar and freshman designated player Noelany Benitez finished out the rally with two more runs to only trail the Falcons by one run.
Cerritos came back in the top of the sixth with one more run to extend their lead by two. Then the Vikings bounced back in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs from Zendejas, freshman pinch runner Destinee Ripley, and Benitez to take back the lead 10-9.
The Falcons were shut-out in the seventh inning and the Vikings finished the game with the 10-9 conference victory. To see the remainder of the softball schedule, click here.
Baseball- Coach Crook Takes Home 600th Win with Shut-Out over Mt. SAC
The Long Beach City College baseball team shut-out Mt. San Antonio College 12-0 on Tuesday afternoon to seal Coach Casey Crook's 600th victory with the Vikings. With the eighth-consecutive win this season, the Vikings improve to 16-10 overall and 10-2 in South Coast Conference action.
Freshman pitcher Sebastian Irwin (4-1) earned his fourth win on the mound with only allowing the Mounties to six hits in six innings, while striking out two.
In the first inning, sophomore left fielder Mark Stanford opened the game with a two RBI single to bring in sophomore short stop Travis Aversa and sophomore second baseman Raul Gonzalez.
Then in the top of the fourth inning, Aversa tripled for three RBI to extend the Vikings' lead over Mt. SAC 5-0. The Vikings powered in three more runs in the sixth inning with another RBI single from Aversa and a triple from sophomore right fielder Rafeek Rahim to score in Aversa and Gonzalez.
In the eighth inning, the Vikings scored in two more runs from sophomore center fielder Chris Rubottom and Stanford. The Vikings then closed out the ninth inning with three runs to seal the 12-0 conference victory and Coach Crook's 600th career-win. To view the remainder of the schedule, click here.
Men's Volleyball- No. 3 Vikings Upset No. 2 El Camino in 3-1 Conference Win
The No. 3 Long Beach men's volleyball won their fifth-consecutive game against the No. 4 Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros 3-2 in their sixth conference game of the season. With the win, the Viking improve to 10-3 and 5-1 in the Western State Conference.
The Viking smashed the Vaqueros in the first set 25-9. Then Long Beach dropped the second and third sets 18-25 and 23-25.
The Vaqueros were ready to finish the game in the fourth set, but the Vikings kept rallying and ultimately won the fourth set 29-27. Finally, in the fifth and final set, the Vikings took control of the lead and held on to win 15-10.
Freshman setter Joseph Rocha totaled 38 assists for the game and led the team with 11 digs. Freshman outside hitter Kyle Anema was on fire at the net as he smashed 15 kills and had four digs. Freshman middle blocker Geoffrey Mike and freshman opposite Uriel Batista were the defense for the Vikings as they both totaled five blocks.

Beach Volleyball
The No.1 Long Beach City College beach volleyball team defeated the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners last Friday in a 5-0 sweep.
Sophomores Sierra Davis and Brooklin Mize, Doris Woods and Isabella Alvarez, Kaitlyn Peterson and Elsa Woods, Emma Harris and freshman Calissa Candalot all won their sets in two sets.
The beach volleyball team will return to the sand on Friday, April 5 at Grand Canyon University for a two-day tournament. For the rest of the beach volleyball schedule, click here.
Track & Field
The track & field team competed at Concordia Irvine this past weekend.
After placing sixth and seventh in the 100 meter preliminaries, freshman Aazalet Danage took home fifth place in the 100 meter finals with a 12.38. She went on to take third place in the 200 meter finals with a 25.21 and helped her 4x100 relay team (Cicely Arana, Destinee Augustus and Destiny Bradley) take second place.
For the men's side, sophomore Darnelle Harris placed fifth in the 100 meter finals with a 10.83 and sixth in the 200 meters finals with a 22.24. He also helped his team take first place in the 4 x 100 relay (Emari Bennett, Andrew Ruffin, Rickie Taylor) with a time of 42.77. Freshman Emari Bennett also placed second in the 400 hurdles with a 56.97.

Swimming
The men's and women's swim team competed with Cerritos College and Rio Hondo College at Rio Hondo last Friday afternoon.
The women's team started off with a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (Karissa Qualley, Victoria Rowe, Alejandra Villa, Kimberly Curiel) with a time of 2:06.09. Villa went on to place take home gold in the 1000 yard freestyle with a 12:00.33, 200 yard breast stroke with a 2:44.68, and in the 200 yard IM with a 2:25.24.
The men's team also had some top finishes with freshman Josh Harvey in the 100 yard freestyle with a 50.55, freshman Will Barnes in the 200 yard butterfly with a 2:02.11, and freshman Michael Baker in the 500 yard freestyle and the 200 yard individual medley.
