Baseball- No. 12 Baseball Advances to Super Regionals at No. 1 Orange Coast
The No. 12 Long Beach City College baseball team upset the No. 5 Ventura College (3-1, 0-5, 12-3) in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regionals this past weekend. With the wins, the Vikings secured a spot in the CCCAA Super Regionals against No. 1 Orange Coast College.
In game one against Ventura, the Vikings were relentless on the mound with sophomore starting pitcher Garrett Rennie (8-2) holding the Pirates to one run on five hits in eight innings of work, while striking down 13 batters. Freshman pitcher Trevor Sutt (3-1, 9) came in with his ninth save in the final inning to seal the win for the Vikings.
Ventura took game two with a 5-0 win over Long Beach, but the Vikings rallied in game three with the 12-3 win. The Vikings brought out the bats with two home runs from sophomore first baseman Mark Stanford and one from sophomore third baseman Chris Rubottom. Sophomore designated hitter David Balboa and sophomore catcher Brett Wells each had an RBI triple to help secure the win and advancement for the Vikings.
No. 1 Orange Coast (31-8-1) toppled No. 16 LA Mission College in a two-game sweep (8-1, 10-3) in the SoCal Regionals this past weekend. The top-ranked team blew through the Eagles with ease to secure their place in the Super Regionals.
The Vikings traveled to Orange Coast earlier this season for a three-game series and fell to the Pirates (2-8, 3-8, 1-9).

Men's Volleyball- Men's Volleyball Crowned the 2019 CCCAA State Champions
The No. 3 Long Beach City College men's volleyball team was crowned the 2019 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Champions on Saturday evening at Fullerton College after defeating the No. 4 Irvine Valley College Lasers in a 3-0 sweep. This is the tenth state title for Long Beach men's volleyball, and third under head coach Jonathan Charette.
The Vikings came ready to the Hornets' Nest after upsetting the No.2 El Camino Warriors on Thursday evening in the CCCAA Semifinal 3-0. The Lasers put up a tough barrier in the first set, but the Vikings were able to push through and take the first set 25-22. The Vikings continued their offensive momentum in the second set as they defeated the Lasers 25-12. Then they sealed their state title with another 25-12 set win to claim their victory.
Freshman outside hitter Kyle Anema earned the 2019 State Tournament Most Valuable Player accolades as he led the Vikings with 13 kills and two service aces. Anema was a force that the Lasers could not stop. He was intensely accurate at the net and drove his team to victory with his precision and intensity.
Freshman setter Joseph Rocha and freshman opposite Uriel Batista were also named to the All-State Tournament team for their display of athleticism and leadership during the tournament. Rocha totaled 33 assists for the Vikings and had a timely fake-out kill against Irvine Valley. Batista was dialed in for the game from the start as he smashed 10 kills and had two block assists for the Vikings.
The Vikings finished their championship season with 19-3 record.
Beach Volleyball- Beach Volleyball Advances Two Pairs to CCCAA State Pairs Championship
The Vikings advance both pairs in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regionals to the CCCAA State Pairs Championship on Friday, May 10 at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center.
In the SoCal Regionals, sophomores No. 16 Elsa Woods and Kaitlyn Peterson defeated No. 17 San Diego City Baron/Schaal (21-14, 21-13) in a two-set sweep. Then E. Woods/Peterson fell to No. 1 Grossmont Goycoochea/Morris in two sets (21-8, 21-17) in the Top 16 Round.
Sophomores No. 9 Doris Woods and Isabella Alvarez first defeated No. 24 Santa Ana Mumford/Pooee (21-9, 21-16) in two, and then took down No. 25 College of the Canyon Lyneis/Smith (21-19, 21-17) in the Top 16. They advanced to the quarterfinals to take on No. 1 Grossmont Goycoochea/Morris, but then fell in two sets (22-20, 21-10). Grossmont went on to win the SoCal Regional Pairs Championship.
E. Woods/Peterson will now go into the CCCAA State Pairs Championship with a No. 10 ranking and are in Pool #2 with No. 2 Cypress Berneker/Zavala, No. 7 Feather River Nagase/Carnes, No. 18 El Camino College K. Donatucci/Villasenor.
D.Woods/Alvarez are now ranked No. 8 going into the CCCAA State Pairs Championship and are in Pool #4 with No. 19 MiraCosta Lomax/Evans and No. 1 West Valley Sekona/Henderson, No. 9 Cabrillo Cary/Skucius.

Track & Field- Track & Field Moves Forward to the SoCal Finals
The Long Beach City College Track & Field team participated in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Prelims this past weekend at Riverside College.
On the men's side, sophomore Moises Marquez qualified for the SoCal Finals in the 5K by taking third place with a time of 15:46.93. This is Marquez's second CCCAA State Championship, as he came in 25th place and qualified to the All-State team in the 2018 Cross Country State Championship.
Sophomore James Martin also qualified for the SoCal Finals in the triple jump after coming in seventh place with a 13.67 meter mark.
The women's team put their best foot forward as both relay teams (Destinee Augustus, Cicely Arana, Aazalet Danage, Vanessa Marchorro) advanced to the Finals. The 4 x 100 took third place with a 47.91 time and the 4 x 400 came in sixth with a time of 4:09.43.
Danage was unstoppable as she advanced in the 200 meter and the 400 meter events. She placed fourth in the 400 meter race and put up her best time of the season with a 59.06.
Other qualifiers included freshman Destiny Diaz, who took fifth in the steeplechase with a 12:19.43, and freshman Lyling Irwin in the pole vault with a 1.35 meter mark.
Freshman Callissa Candalot cleared through the javelin prelims and finals with 34.42 meter mark and punched her ticket straight to the CCCAA State Championship.
These Vikings will return to action at the CCCAA SoCal Finals on Saturday, May 11 at Riverside City College.
Swimming
The Long Beach City College swim team qualified two athletes in the 2019 California Community College Swim State Championships at De Anza College this past weekend.
Freshman Victoria Rowe placed 16th in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.56. During her prelims, she swam a 2:21.36 and then she shaved three seconds off the 200 yard butterfly to place eighth in the finals with a 2:18.05 time. Freshman Michael Baker swam the 200 yard backstroke and took home 12th place with a 1:59.73.
The Vikings swim team will return next season.
