Viking Athletic Week in Review- 9/9/2019: Football Wins Big in First Game, Men’s Water Polo Undefeated in GWC Tournament

Football

The Vikings traveled to Grossmont College for their first game of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon. Long Beach then took home the 55-24 win in an epic blowout against the Griffins.

The Vikings took the initial lead with a 35 yard touchdown pass from freshman quarter back Derrach West to sophomore wide receiver Zion Bowens in the first quarter. Bowens then smashed another 47-yard touchdown to command the lead 14-0.

The Griffins answered back with their first touchdown with 5 minutes left in the quarter, but the Vikings were still hungry and freshman wide receiver Tahj Wright ran into the end zone with a 13-yard pass from West to seal the first quarter 21-7.

In the second quarter, Grossmont hit a field goal, while the Vikings slammed in their fourth touchdown from freshman wide receiver Tyon Harvey to end the first half with the 28-10 lead over the Griffins.

West got himself in the end zone in the third quarter to extend the lead 35-10. In the fourth quarter, the Vikings ramped up their offense to another level with a 78-yard run from freshman running back Jonathan Watson, a nine-yard run from freshman wide receiver Zack Leets and another touchdown from Harvey to seal the 55-24 win for the Vikings.

Freshman kicker Alfredo Flores stunned the Griffins as he went seven-for-seven on PATs for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College football team will play again this Saturday, Sep. 14 in their home opener against Mt. San Antonio College in the "Welcome Back LBCC Game" at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m. To view the entire football schedule, click here.


Women's Soccer

The Vikings opened their season with a 2-1 loss at Cypress College last Wednesday afternoon. Freshman forward Allison Rose Veloz had three shots against the Chargers, but couldn't make it happen for the Vikings. Freshman forward Nathaly Silva scored her first goal in the second half to tie the game 1-1.

The Chargers came back with their second goal in the second half and took the win away from the Vikings. Freshman goalkeeper Almareli Quintero totaled five saves for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College women's soccer team will play again on Tuesday, Sept. 10 against Golden West at 2 p.m. on the LBCC Soccer Field. To view the rest of the schedule, click here.


Men's Soccer

The Long Beach City College men's soccer team had two games this past week. In the first game at Pasadena College, the Vikings fell 3-0. Freshman midfielder Louis Arellano and freshman forward Cameran Badal each had two shots on goal, but couldn't finish for the Vikings.

Then on Friday, the Vikings traveled to Antelope Valley College and lost 5-2. Sophomore midfielders Sergio Flores and Alexander Moreno each scored against the Marauders.

Women's Volleyball

The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team traveled to Santa Barbara City College to participate in the SBCC Quad Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

In the first game, the Vikings fell to Bakersfield College 3-2. Sophomore outside hitter Anisa Lopez smashed 19 kills and held a .640 kill percentage against the Renegades. Sophomore libero Doris Woods nailed 19 digs and freshman setter Jillian Petnicki totaled 43 assists for the Vikings.

Then in the second game against Santa Barbara City College, the Vikings swept the Vaqueros 3-0. Freshman outside hitter Callissa Candalot led the team with 13 kills and Woods nailed two service aces against the Vaqueros.

The Vikings will return to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Irvine Valley College at 5 p.m. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Men's Water Polo

The Long Beach City College men's water polo team opened their season in the Golden West Tournament this past weekend.

In their first game on Friday, the Vikings took down Saddleback College 22-6 and then defeated LA Valley 10-8.

The Vikings moved on to Saturday's games with an 8-5 win over Cerritos College and then a 12-9 victory over rival Golden West College.

The Vikings are off to a great undefeated start with a 4-0 record. They will return to the pool on Friday, Sept 13 in the West Valley Tournament. To view the rest of the men's water polo schedule, click here.
