Viking Athletic Week in Review- 9/17/2019: Men’s Water Polo Undefeated, Women’s Soccer Takes Down Golden West College
Football- No. 16 Vikings Fall to No. 9 Mt. SAC

The No. 16 Long Beach City College football team fell to the No. 9 Mt. San Antonio College Mounties 36-20 on Saturday night in their home opener at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the tough loss, the Vikings hold 1-1 overall record.

The Mounties came onto the gridiron ready to play as they scored their first touchdown in the first quarter, followed by a team safety. They scored two more touchdowns to hold off the Vikings and ended the first half 22-0.

In the second half, the Mounties scored again to command the Vikings 29-0. Long Beach then felt the fire and came back fueled as freshman wide receiver Julian Woodard hailed a 32-yard pass from freshman quarter back Derrach West to put the Vikings on the board 29-7.

Then with four minutes left in the third quarter freshman running back Saeed Galloway burst from the pack to slay a 38-yard run into the Mounties' end zone to start closing the gap 29-14.

Freshman kicker Christian Lemus made his debut and nailed both PATs and totaled 242 yards in five kickoffs for the Vikings.

In the fourth quarter, the Mounties scored their final touchdown with five minutes left on the clock, but the Vikings weren't finished yet as West threw a 42-yard burner to freshman wide receiver Dominic Wingfield for the Vikings final touchdown to end the game 36-20.

The Long Beach City College Vikings football team will return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 21 at LA Valley College at 6 PM. Freshman kicker Alfredo Flores stunned the Griffins as he went seven-for-seven on PATs for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College football team will play again next Saturday, Sept. 28 at Riverside College at 6 p.m. To view the entire football schedule, click here.


Women's Soccer- Vikings Take Down Golden West in Home Opener

The Long Beach City College women's soccer team won their first game of the season in their home opener against Golden West College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Rustlers were first to score in the first minute of the game with a corner kick header, but then they fouled the Vikings in the goal box and freshman forward Allison Rose Veloz took the penalty kick and smashed it in the bottom left-hand corner to tie the game 1-1.

Veloz was back at it again in the second half with a long, hard kick to the top left corner of the Rustlers' cage to seal the Vikings' 2-1 victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Almareli Quintero was a force in the goal as she totaled three saves for the Vikings. 

The Long Beach City College women's soccer team then returned to the field on Friday, Sept. 13 and defeated Saddleback College with the game-winning goal in the final minute of the game from Veloz.

Men's Soccer-Men's Soccer Falls to Chaffey 4-3

The Long Beach City College men's soccer team fell to the Chaffey College Panthers 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the Vikings Soccer Field With the loss, the Vikings drop to 1-4 overall.

Chaffey was first to score in the 17th minute of the game and then sophomore midfielder Jaelyn Agu nailed a header from a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Sergio Flores to tie the Panthers 1-1. Then freshman forward Cameran Badal slammed a goal into the back of the Panthers' net to lead Chaffey 2-1 at halftime.

The Panthers came back stronger in the second half as they tied the game 2-2 in the 55th minute. Badal bounced back in action as he scored his second goal to have the Vikings lead again 3-2.

Chaffey was not finished just yet as they scored two more goals to take the 4-3 win away from the Vikings.

Long Beach City College men's soccer also traveled to Golden West College and fell to the Rustlers 1-0. To see the remainder of the men's soccer schedule, click here


Women's Volleyball- Vikings Fall to Orange Coast at Home

The Long Beach City College Vikings suffered a tough 3-0 loss to Orange Coast College on Friday evening in the Building Q Gym. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 3-5 overall.

The Pirates came out strong as they opened the game with a service against the Vikings. Throughout the game, the Vikings were not able to garner the correct footing against the Pirates to slow them down.

Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Earkman led the team with 10 kills and had seven digs. Sophomore setter Lexi Randolph and freshman setter Jillian Petnicki had over ten assists each and sophomore libero Doris Woods had 15 digs for the Vikings.

The Vikings will return to the court on Wednesday Sept. 18 at Fullerton College at 6 p.m. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Men's Water Polo

The Long Beach City College men's water polo team continued their winning-streak over the weekend in the West Valley Tournament. With their four wins, the Vikings now hold an 8-0 overall record.

The Vikings blazed past San Joaquin Delta 19-3 and Diablo Valley 18-12 on Friday and then moved on to Sierra College 16-9 and West Valley 16-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore attacker Vedran Latkovic leads the Vikings with 26 goals so far this season. Following Latkovic is freshman attacker Nikola Ilic with 22 goals.

Then men's water polo team will be back in the pool on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Rio Hondo College at 4:30 p.m. To view the rest of the men's water polo schedule, click here.


Cross Country- Cross Country Places in the SoCal Preview

Over the weekend, the Long Beach City College cross-country teams competed in the SoCal Preview at Mission Bay Park hosted by Cuyamaca College.

Sophomore Donovan Zavala placed the highest for the Vikings with a 12th place finish with a time of 21:49.3 in the four-mile run. Next up for the men's team was freshman Jonathan Ruiz with a 22:44.6 in 46th place.  Freshman Evan Ridgeway also placed for the Vikings with a 24:33.8 time.

On the women's side, sophomore Dasani Zavala placed 43rd with time of 21:54.3. Following Zavala was freshman Amaya Ferris with a time of 21:55.5 in 46th place.

The Long Beach City College cross-country teams will race again on Friday, Sept. 27 in the Coach Downey XC Classic at Morley Field hosted by San Diego City College at 11 a.m.
