Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 10/28/2019: Football Comes From Behind to Defeat Bakersfield, Men’s Water Polo Winning-Streak Snapped

The Long Beach City College football team came from behind and took home the 23-20 win against Bakersfield on Saturday night at Bakersfield College. With the win, the Vikings advance to 5-2 overall and are undefeated in conference action with a 2-0 record.

The Vikings were on the board first with a 27-yard field goal from freshman kicker Alfredo Flores to initially start the lead 3-0. The Renegades came through with back-to-back touchdowns to take the lead away from the Vikings 14-3.

Freshman wide receiver Zack Leets then scored the Vikings' first touchdown with two seconds left on the clock in the first half to start Long Beach's offensive momentum in the second half.

At the start of the second half, the Renegades hit two-consecutive field goals to hold on their lead 20-10. In the fourth quarter, sophomore running back Mason Bowen scored a touchdown with less than five minutes left in the game and then freshman quarterback Derrach West sealed the 23-20 Vikings win with a five-yard run touchdown with 42 seconds left on the clock.

The Vikings will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Veterans Memorial Stadium against Moorpark College at 6 p.m. To view the remaining football schedule, click here.

 


Women's Soccer- Women's Soccer Falls to Rio Hondo in Conference Play

The No. 17 Long Beach City College Vikings fell to the No. 9 Rio Hondo College Roadrunners 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the tough loss, the Vikings drop to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in the South Coast Conference.

Rio Hondo was on the board within the first minute of the game to start the lead 1-0. In the second half, they scored again to bring their lead up to 2-0. Long Beach's freshman defender Emma Rosillo popped one in for the Vikings in the final extra minutes of the game, but the Roadrunners took home the 2-1 conference win.

Freshman goalkeeper Almareli Quintero had three big saves for the Vikings against Rio Hondo.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at East Los Angeles College at 2:00 p.m. To view the rest of the schedule, click here.

 


Women's Volleyball- Earkman Takes Out Pasadena in 3-0 Sweep

The state-ranked No. 15 women's volleyball team swept Pasadena City College 3-0 on Friday evening. With the win, the Vikings advance to 14-6 overall and 9-1 in the South Coast Conference.

Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Earkman was unstoppable against the Lancers as she totaled 21 kills and had a .439 kill percentage for the Vikings. She was a powerhouse in the nail-biting third and final set to ensure the Vikings' conference victory.

Sophomore setter Cairon Fido was the catalyst behind the ball and totaled 32 assists for the Vikings. Sophomore outside hitter Anisa Lopez also contributed to the Vikings incredible offense as she nailed 11.

As a team, the Vikings dominated the Lancers with 56 digs and had 16 total blocks.

The Long Beach City college women's volleyball team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Cerritos College at 6 p.m. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Women's Water Polo

The No. 4 women's water polo team participated in the Battle at the Beach Tournament this past Friday and Saturday. Due to the pool construction at LBCC, the tournament was moved to Fullerton College.

On Friday, the Vikings defeated Cypress College 13-6 and then Golden West College 15-10. Sophomore attackers Jillian Schultz and Sydney Brightenburg each had seven goals for the day.

On Saturday, the Vikings advanced in their bracket and eventually fell to Fullerton College 15-12 and Santa Barbara City College 12-1.

The women's water polo team will play again on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Cerritos College at 3 p.m. The game was moved from LBCC to Cerritos due to the pool construction. To view the rest of the women's water polo schedule, click here.

 


Men's Water Polo

Last weekend, the No.1 men's water polo team opened the Golden West Tournament II with a pair of wins against Saddleback College (15-5) and Cerritos College (14-8).

On Saturday, the Vikings' 23-game winning-streak was snapped by the Golden West College Rustlers with a devastating 12-7 loss. The Vikings then went on to defeat LA Valley College 10-8 to finish out the tournament.

Sophomore attacker Vedran Latkovic led the team with ten goals for the weekend and freshman goalkeeper Cole Raulston totaled 26 saves in the tournament.

 The No. 1 men's water polo team will compete again on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Cerritos College at 4:30 p.m. The game was moved from LBCC to Cerritos due to the pool construction. To see the remainder of the schedule, click here.
