Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 11/18/2019: Men’s Water Polo in the State Championships, Football to Host Southern California Bowl Game

Football- Football Finish 4-1 in National Northern League to Share Conference Title

The No. 5 Long Beach City College football team fell to the No. 12 Ventura College Pirates 30-24 on Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the loss, the Vikings still hold on to the National Northern League championship in a three-way tie with Ventura College and College of the Canyons. This is Head Coach Brett Peabody's fourth conference title.

The Pirates were first on the board with a 28-yard field goal. The Vikings answered back with a touchdown run from freshman quarterback Derrach West to top Ventura 7-3. The Pirates finished out the first quarter with a seven-yard run to take back the lead 10-7.

In the second quarter, the Pirates hit a 40-yard field goal, but then freshman kicker Alfredo Flores answered back with a 35-yard field goal to only trail the Pirates by three points. Ventura then hit another field goal to close out the half with the 16-10 lead.

The Pirates shut-out the Vikings in the third quarter with back-to-back touchdowns, but then the Vikings turned it around in the fourth quarter with a 15-yard run from West at the 11:27 mark to start the Vikings' offensive comeback. Sophomore running back Talaun Patton was up next for the Vikings as he scored a two-yard run to bring the Vikings to only trail the Pirates by six points.

Freshman defensive back Dallas Burke scored a safety for the Vikings with three minutes left in the game, but the Vikings weren't able to score again and ultimately fell to the Pirates 30-26.

Despite the loss, the Vikings have clinched a conference title and will host the Southern California Bowl against Southwestern College on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. To view the remaining football schedule, click here.


Women's Soccer- Vikings Take Down El Camino 5-1 on Sophomore Day

The state-ranked No. 16 Long Beach City College women's soccer team defeated the El Camino College Warriors 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Vikings advance to 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the South Coast Conference. 

Freshman goalkeeper Arianna Perez was on fire in the cage as she held on to the shutout until the 87th minute. She also had two saves against the Warriors.

Sophomore forwards Brittany Caudillo and Allison Rose Veloz score back-to-back goals in the 26th and 27th minute. Freshman midfielder Alyna Campos was on the assist for both goals to help start the Vikings' take the initial lead. 

Veloz came back in the second half with a cross-cage shot to the left hand side to keep the Vikings ahead 3-0. Currently, Veloz sits on top of the South Coast Confernce leaderboard with 17 total goals.

Campos also smashed a long lob goal over the Warriors goalkeeper's head in the 57th minute to extend the Vikings to 4-0. Freshman midfielder Daisy Herrera slammed in the last goal for the Vikings from the left side to catapult the Vikings lead to 5-0. The Warriors finalized the game with a solo goal in the 87th minute to end the game 5-1.

Women's Volleyball- Vikings Sweep Pasadena in Rd. 2 of the South Coast Conference Tournament

The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team swept the Pasadena City College Lancers 3-0 in the semifinals of the South Coast Conference Tournament on Friday evening in the Hall of Champions. With the win, the Vikings advance to the final round in the tournament next week.

Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Earkman was the standout Viking as she led the team with 14 dangerous kills against the Lancers. Earkman also tallied 19 digs to help catapult the team to victory. Freshman setter Lexi Randolph was the support system for the Vikings and totaled 15 assists.

Sophomore outside hitter Anisa Lopez was a threat on offense as well with 10 kills, two service aces and had ten digs.

The Vikings will return to the court in the finals of the South Coast Conference Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Long Beach City College. To view the remaining schedule, click here.


Men's Basketball- Men's Basketball Takes Down Riverside 79-70

The Long Beach City College men's basketball team defeated the Riverside City College Tigers 79-70 on Thursday evening in the Hall of Champions. With the win, the Vikings advance to 3-1 overall.

Sophomore guard Jace Bass led the team with 27 points and had six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the game.  Sophomore guard Kester Ofoegbu was also on top with 15 points and had six rebounds and four steals. Freshman forward Matthew Schmidt was a force at the net with seven rebounds and had one block for the Vikings.

The Vikings powered through the game with ease as they led the Tigers in field goals, rebounds and three pointers. The Vikings had the largest lead of 24 points towards the end of the game to seal the 79-70 win over Riverside.

Women's Water Polo

The No. 4 Long Beach City College women's water polo team fell to No. 5 Citrus College 11-10 in the SoCal Regional Playoffs at Riverside City College.

The Vikings were ahead the entire game until the fourth quarter, when the Fighting Owls rallied and outshot the Vikings 4-1 to take away the 11-10 win.

Sophomore attacker Sydney Brightenburg led the Vikings with five goals and freshman goalkeeper Alinna Perez totaled four saves.

The Vikings will return the pool next Fall.


Men's Water Polo

The state-ranked No. 1 Long Beach City College men's water polo team participated in the SoCal Regionals this past weekend at Riverside City College.

In the first round, the Vikings took down Riverside City College 12-7 to advance to the semifinals on Saturday.

The Vikings then defeated Cuesta College in overtime 13-12 to move on to the finals. With the OT win, the Vikings secured a spot in the State Championship.

The Vikings ultimately fell to Golden West College 12-10 in the SoCal Regional Finals, but the Vikings will return to the State Championships on Friday, Nov. 22 against Sierra College at 1 p.m. at Golden West College.

Cross Country

The Long Beach City College cross-country teams participated in the Southern California Regionals on Nov. 8 at Mission Bay Park.

Sophomore Dasani Zavala and freshman Amaya Ferris both qualified for the State Championships on the women's side for the Vikings.

Sophomore Donovan Zavala and freshman Jonathan Ruiz also placed high enough to qualify for State on the men's side.

The State Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Woodward Park in Fresno at 10 a.m.
