In Memoriam: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Coach Wil Shaw

Wil Shaw began his coaching career at Long Beach City College (LBCC) as an assistant football coach and physical education instructor in 1973. After serving as an assistant coach for 11 years, Shaw was named head coach in 1984. He served as the head football coach for eight seasons, compiling an impressive 77 total wins during his 19 years with LBCC football. Despite the challenges of coaching during a time when gang activity was at its height in the Long Beach area, Shaw remained committed to his players' success, achieving a remarkable 99% graduation rate for his football players.

Shaw retired in 2012, after earning the respect and admiration of his peers, colleagues and players alike.  Even after his coaching tenure had concluded, Shaw continued to work tirelessly to secure scholarships for LBCC student-athletes, ensuring that they had every opportunity to pursue their dreams. For over 30 years, he led by example, embodying the values of dedication, hard work, and perseverance that are at the heart of what it truly means to be a LBCC Viking.

In 2019, the athletics department honored Shaw for his achievements at the annual Golf Tournament and in 2023, Shaw was inducted into the Long Beach City College Hall of Champions. "In memory of our esteemed colleague, whose dedication, wisdom, and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered," said Dean of Kinesiology, Athletics, & Public Health Randy Totorp. "Wil Shaw was a true mentor, his integrity and leadership continue to inspire us.  I am grateful for the time we had together and will forever cherish the impact he had on my life personally and all those here at Long Beach City College."

Born in North Carolina, Shaw moved to California when he was seven. He helped lead Santa Ana Valley High School football to three consecutive league titles. He then attended Santa Ana College, where he played for two seasons before transferring to Kansas State University. He later received his master's degree from Pepperdine University. In 1968, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys and later played with the Atlanta Falcons before joining LBCC. "Wil Shaw will always be remembered as a true legend in the world of football and education, while his legacy will continue to inspire and motivate generations to come," exclaimed Director of Athletics, Kal Stewart. Under Shaw's mentorship and guidance, many of his former players have gone on to achieve great success in a variety of fields, including acting, coaching, medicine, entrepreneurship, law, and education. He is survived by his wife Erma and their three children, Myeshia, Nikole, and Marc. Marc played for LBCC Football in 1990.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 8, at Friendship Baptist Church, 17145 Bastanchury Road, Yorba Linda 92886, at 11 a.m. Viewing will be at 10 a.m. The funeral repast will be held immediately after the service at Coyote Hills Golf Course, 1440 E.
