John Gonsalves (Baseball, 1962-63): Gonsalves was a two-year member of the LBCC baseball team and earned All-Metropolitan Conference honors as a second baseman in 1963. He went on to play two seasons at Long Beach State and earned NCAA all-district honors in 1965. Gonsalves played three seasons in the New York Mets organization and was an All-Star second baseman in the Class A Penn League. He returned to Long Beach State in 1969 to take over the baseball program and led the Dirtbags until 1988. He was named Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA) Coach of the Year in 1970 after his squad took first place. Gonsalves is the winningest coach in LBSU history with 462 wins. He served as a professor in the department of kinesiology and physical education from 1969-2002.
