Beach Volleyball Finalizes Season at CCCAA State Championships

Over the weekend, the Long Beach City College beach volleyball team competed in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championships at West Valley College.

The Vikings first participated in the Team Championships on Thursday, May 10 with their first match against Moorpark. The Vikings defeated Moorpark 5-0 without skipping a beat. Freshmen Sierra Davis and Josannah Vazquez, sophomore Jessica Kaeka and freshman Brooklin Mize, freshmen Isabella Alvarez and Doris Woods and freshmen Mariah Clausen and Elsa Woods all breezed past their opponents without dropping a set.

In the next match in the CCCAA State Teams Championship, the Vikings advanced to play Cabrillo College and fell 3-2. Kaeka and Mize won their match in three sets, and Alvarez and Woods skated past Cabrillo with a 2-0 shutout in their match, but the Seahawks took down the Vikings to go on and win the 2018 CCCAA State Team Championship.

The CCCAA Pairs Championship started the next day with the top 16 pairs ready to face off at 9 a.m. Kaeka and Mize went up against Megan Ramseyer and Taira Ka'awaloa of Irvine Valley College and fell 2-1.

On the other side of the bracket, Davis and Vazquez started out with a 2-1 win over Antelope Valley to advance into the quarterfinals. They then defeated El Camino 2-1 to make into the semi-finals and took down MiraCosta with a 2-0 sweep to finally face off to Ramseyer and Ka'awaloa of Irvine Valley in the Championship match. Davis and Vazquez ultimately fell to Irvine Valley in two sets and IVC went on to become the CCCAA Pairs State Champions.

The Vikings capped off the season with a third place finish in the CCCAA State Championships and two pairs teams that competed in the top 16 in the state, with one team advancing all the way to the finals.
