Vikings Rally in Fifth Inning Against LA Mission to Win Game

The Long Beach City College baseball team hauled in the 9-4 win over LA Mission on Saturday afternoon at the Joe Hicks Field.

Freshman pitcher Benji Gonzalez earned his first win of the season with one run off three hits, and had one strikeout.

The Vikings had a rough start in the first inning defensively, with the Eagles scoring in three runs. The Vikings answered back with a tripled from sophomore outfielder Robert Funk followed by an RBI double from sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet to put one on the board.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings came out swinging. Freshman shortstop David Rivera had an RBI single, followed by Funk's RBI double. Then with the bases loaded by sophomore outfielder Val Stammler, Berberet and Funk; freshman first baseman Mark Stanford smashed a double to left field for three RBI. Sophomore outfielder Collin Perez finished the inning with a triple to left field to bring in Stanford to extend the Vikings' lead to 6-3.

LA Mission scored one more run in the sixth inning, but the Vikings added two more runs from Stanford and freshman second baseman Travis Aversa to take the 9-4 win.

The Vikings will play again at home on Tuesday, Feb. 13 against Orange Coast College at 2 p.m.
