Berberet Fires Off Against the Dons

The Long Beach City College baseball team took down the Santa Ana College Dons 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Viking continue on a five-game winning streak and bring their overall record up to 15-12.

Freshman pitcher Bryan Sandoval (1-1) earned his first win on the mound with two runs on six hits, while striking out two in five innings of work. Sophomore pitcher Geovani Ceballos received his first save with only allowing one hit to Santa Ana in four innings.

The Dons came out swinging in the first inning with an RBI double to center field to score in their first run. Then they scored one more on a ground out to start the game with a 2-0 lead.

The Vikings answered back in the bottom of the first with two runs from freshman second baseman Raul Gonzalez and sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet.

Berberet owned the field with going two-for-five at-bat, smashing a double in the first inning, sending off a home run in the bottom of the fifth, while also earning an RBI.

In the bottom of the third, freshman catcher David Balboa singled to centerfield for 2 RBI to bring in Gonzalez and David Rivera.

In the bottom of the fourth, history repeated itself with a 2 RBI single to center field from freshman short stop David Rivera.

Sophomore outfielder Robert Funk homered right after Berberet's 13th career home run to bring the score up to 7-2.

Gonzalez smashed the ball one more time in the bottom of the sixth to bring in freshman center fielder Danny Gill and then sophomore left fielder Aaron Fawcett finalized the score with an RBI single to bring in Rivera to win the game 9-2.

The Vikings will play again on Thursday, Mar. 29 at Santa Ana College at 2 p.m.
