Vikings Push Past No. 2 Cerritos in 4-3 Victory

The Long Beach City College baseball team upset the No. 2 Cerritos College Falcons 4-3 on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings advance to 19-17 and 10-8 in the South Coast- South Conference.

Freshman pitcher Garrett Rennie (5-1) took over on the mound and held off the Falcons to zero hits and zero runs, while striking out two.

Sophomore third baseman Reese Berberet kicked off the game with a double to left field in his first at-bat. Then freshman catcher David Balboa was next up with a double to bring in Berberet for the Vikings' first run.

The Falcons scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead 4-1, but the Vikings weren't finished yet. In the bottom of the fourth, Balboa scored off a single from freshman second baseman Raul Gonzalez to close in on the Falcons.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gonzalez was back in action with a triple to right field to bring in sophomore center fielder Val Stammler. Next up was sophomore designated hitter Aaron Fawcett with an RBI single to bring Gonzalez home to finalize the 4-3 victory for the Vikings.

The Vikings will play again on Saturday, April 21 at Cerritos College at 12 p.m. to close out the three-game series.
