Baseball Blast Past Roadrunners with 10-3 Conference Win

The Long Beach City College baseball team dominated the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners 10-3 on Tuesday afternoon in their sixth South Coast Conference game. With the win, the Vikings improve to 10-10 overall, and 4-2 in SCC action.

Freshman pitcher Sebastian Irwin (3-1) earned the win on the mound as he only allowed three runs to Rio Hondo, while striking out two. Freshman third baseman/ pitcher Noel Soto then came in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win for the Vikings by holding the Roadrunners to only one hit.

The Vikings opened the game with five runs in the bottom of the first to command the lead. Freshman right fielder Zach Rivas led with the first RBI single to left field to bring in sophomore second baseman Raul Gonzalez, then with bases loaded, sophomore catcher Brett Wells cracked a triple to center field for three RBI. Sophomore first baseman Robert Barham finished the five-run inning with a sacrifice fly to bring in Wells.

The Roadrunners tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning, but the Vikings held them to only three runs. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore third baseman Mark Stanford got on base from a Roadrunner error and was brought in by a single to left field from Barham. Sophomore center fielder Chris Rubottom was next to score from an RBI single from Gonzalez and then Soto was scored in from another Rio Hondo error to end the inning with the 8-3 lead.

The Vikings weren't finished yet as, Barham smashed a two RBI home run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 10-3 conference win for the Vikings.

The Vikings will return to action on Thursday, Mar. 14 at East Los Angeles College at 2:30 p.m.
