No. 12 Baseball Advances to Super Regionals at No. 1 Orange Coast

The No. 12 Long Beach City College baseball team upset the No. 5 Ventura College (3-1, 0-5, 12-3) in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regionals this past weekend. With the wins, the Vikings secured a spot in the CCCAA Super Regionals against No. 1 Orange Coast College.

In game one against Ventura, the Vikings were relentless on the mound with sophomore starting pitcher Garrett Rennie (8-2) holding the Pirates to one run on five hits in eight innings of work, while striking down 13 batters. Freshman pitcher Trevor Sutt (3-1, 9) came in with his ninth save in the final inning to seal the win for the Vikings.

Ventura took game two with a 5-0 win over Long Beach, but the Vikings rallied in game three with the 12-3 win. The Vikings brought out the bats with two home runs from sophomore first baseman Mark Stanford and one from sophomore third baseman Chris Rubottom. Sophomore designated hitter David Balboa and sophomore catcher Brett Wells each had an RBI triple to help secure the win and advancement for the Vikings.

No. 1 Orange Coast (31-8-1) toppled No. 16 LA Mission College in a two-game sweep (8-1, 10-3) in the SoCal Regionals this past weekend. The top-ranked team blew through the Eagles with ease to secure their place in the Super Regionals.

The Vikings traveled to Orange Coast earlier this season for a three-game series and fell to the Pirates (2-8, 3-8, 1-9).

Orange Coast will host the Vikings in the Super Regionals on May 9 at 2 p.m., May 10 at 2 p.m. and May 11 (if needed) at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and more information regarding the Super Regionals can be found at LBCCVikings.com.
