Baseball defeats Orange Coast in Home Opener

The No. 11 Long Beach City College baseball team defeated the Orange Coast College Pirates 14-5. It was tough day for the Pirates as they are still mourning the loss of Head Coach John Altobelli and his family.

"It is inspirational to see how that group is handling this tough situation," said Vikings Head Coach Casey Crook.

Freshman pitcher Matthew Pinal (1-0) took the win on the mound with six strikeouts, one earned run in six innings of work.

The Vikings were first on the board with a three RBI triple from sophomore center fielder Carter White in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman third baseman Alex Seguine ran in another in the bottom of the third inning to keep the Vikings on top 4-0.

The Vikings popped off in the bottom of the sixth inning with seven runs from White, freshman left fielder Moises Guzman, freshman second baseman Kamau Neighbors, sophomore shortstop David Rivera, sophomore right fielder Jake Creamer, sophomore designated hitter Lucas Gonzalez and sophomore catcher Diego Altamirano.

The Pirates answered back with four runs in the seventh inning and one more in the top of the eighth, but the Vikings were not finished yet and sophomore first baseman Zach Rivas started another rally with an RBI single to center field to bring in Altamirano. Then Guzman smashed a two RBI double to score in Seguine and White and finish the game with the 14-5 win.

The Vikings will play again tomorrow at home against San Joaquin Delta at 2 p.m.
