Baseball Takes Down IVC 7-1 in Home Opener

The Long Beach City College Vikings defeated the Irvine Valley College Lasers 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Vikings Baseball Field.

Freshman pitcher Evan Vazquez (1-0) took the win on the mound with only allowing the Lasers to one run on three hits in seven innings of work. Freshman pitcher Marcellus Henry came in for the final two innings and struck down two.

The Lasers were first on the board in the top of the third with an RBI double, but then the Vikings rallied in the bottom of fourth inning to put up four runs. Freshman designated hitter Matthew Pinal started the rally with an RBI double to bring in freshman shortstop Alex Seguine, then freshman third baseman Justin Santoyo hit a bomb to center field to score in Pinal and freshman center fielder Bryan Sanders. Freshman right fielder JT Mendoza finalized the rally with a sacrifice fly to bring in Santoyo and lead the Lasers 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Seguine was batted in from a sacrifice fly from Sanders and in the bottom of the seventh, Santoyo had an RBI ground out to bring Seguine across the plate again. Pinal was the last Vikings across from freshman first baseman Will Schwab's RBI single to left field to finalize the 7-1 win for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will return to the field on Tuesday, Feb. against Chaffey College at 2 p.m.
