Football: Vikings, Potter get offensive in win over Santa Ana

The Long Beach City College football team totaled a season-high 645 yards of offense, including 475 combined yards passing and rushing by freshman quarterback Kenny Potter (San Pedro HS) as the Vikings cruised to a 55-33 non-conference win over visiting Santa Ana College on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The victory improved the Vikings to 2-4 overall this season as they head into a much-needed bye week.

Potter threw for 300 yards for his third straight game as he completed 27 of 37 passes for 301 yards with no interceptions and two touchdown passes. He also ran rampant for a season-high 174 yards rushing, including a pair of big touchdowns.

His 20-yard touchdown run with 1:46 left in the second quarter gave the Vikings a 21-14 lead heading into halftime that they wouldn't give up. Later in the third, Potter broke free for a 55-yard TD to extend LBCC's advantage to 35-14.

Backup quarterbacks Brock Dale (Lakewood HS) and Christian Smith (St. Bernard HS) also got involved in the passing party in the fourth quarter as Dale hit Josiah Blandin (Poly HS) for an 18-yard touchdown and Smith connected with Clayton Granch (Valley Christian HS) for a 16-yard TD.

Sophomore running back Joel Panteau (Banning HS, pictured) ran in for a pair of short touchdowns and totaled 70 yards on 13 carries. De'Quan Hampton (Dominguez HS) had his third 100+ yards receiving game of the season, catching six passes for 103 yards including a 34-yard touchdown from Potter late in the first quarter.

The LBCC defense also had its shining moments throughout the game. AA Vaaulu (Warren HS) blocked a punt and nearly returned it for a touchdown while Emanuel Wyatt (Gahr HS) and Alejandro Amigo (El Paso, TX) both blocked extra-point kicks. Wyatt's blocked kicked was scooped up by Jayson Salesulu (Bellflower HS) in the end zone and returned 100 yards for a defensive two-point conversion but was called back due to a penalty.

Josh Thomas (Cabrillo HS) and Kevin Medearis (Lakewood HS) both intercepted passes while Terance Harvey (Inglewood HS) led LBCC with 11 tackles (9 solo) and two broken up passes.

Santa Ana (1-5) quarterback Shane Truelove led the Dons by throwing for 204 yards on 13 of 27 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Long Beach returns to action on October 26 at 6 p.m. when head coach Brett Peabody makes his return for the first time to face his former team Los Angeles Harbor College.
