JCGRIDIRON.COM DIRTY 30 NATIONAL RANKINGS

After taking over the top spot last week in the California community college and Southern California polls, the Long Beach City College Vikings have achieved even greater heights as LBCC was today named the No. 1 team in the nation according to JCGridIron.com.

The 7-0 Vikings are not only six wins away from a California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) state title, but now could add a national championship to the trophy case as well.  Long Beach has won five national titles, the last coming in 1995.

LBCC third-year head coach Brett Peabody is proud of the honor, but knows there is still plenty of football left to be played this season.

It's exciting and very flattering," said Peabody shortly after hearing the news. "The guys have put in a lot of hard work, dating back to last January when we started lifting weights. They've persevered and overcome a lot of adversity this year to get to this point. I'm really proud of where we are at. But at the same time, like I said it's very flattering, but it means nothing. The final ranking that we are worrying about is after Week 13."

Long Beach was ranked No. 2 in both the JCGridIron.com Dirty 30 National Rankings as well as the JCFootball.com national rankings heading into a bye week this past Saturday. But previous No. 1 Butler Community College of Kansas dropped out of the top spot after being upset 25-20 at home by Garden City Community College.

This week's JCFootball.com national rankings will likely be released on Wednesday.

The newly-appointed No. 1 Vikings will play their biggest game on the season on Saturday (Oct. 31) as they travel for a huge Central League game at Riverside City College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at RCC's Wheelock Stadium.

Long Beach returns to Veterans Memorial Stadium on November 7 for its final regular-season home contest. The Homecoming Game against Citrus College is set for a 6 p.m. start.
