Football Brings in All-Conference Honors

At the conclusion of the season, the Long Beach City College football team saw 17 athletes receive Southern California Football Association National Division All-Northern League post-season honors. The Vikings finished the season with the 2019 National Northern League Conference title and the Southern California Bowl game win against Southwestern College.

 Sophomore linebacker D'Anthony Jones earned top honors as the Defensive Player of the Year for the conference as he tallied 62 tackles, four interceptions, averaged 6.9 tackles per game and was second on the conference leaderboard with 10.5 sacks and 58 sack yards.  

Sophomore wide receiver Zion Bowens, sophomore offensive lineman Teshaun Turpin and freshman quarterback Derrach West were all recognized with First-Team offensive honors. Bowens averaged 67.5 receiving yards per game, while scoring eight touchdowns. Bowens also made the First-Team defensive honors for 203 yards in punt returns. Turpin was a force on the offensive line for the Vikings as he blocked his opponents from the Vikings offense. West was all over the conference leaderboard with 208.2 yards in passing, 19 touchdown throws, and had eight rushing touchdowns.

Sophomore defensive tackle Divine Obichere, sophomore defensive end Shane Irwin, freshman corner back Dallas Branch, freshman safety Dallas Burke all took home First-Team defensive honors. Obichere earns First-Team selection as he had 46 tackles with four sacks and a loss of 20 yards and one fumble recovery. Irwin was a unanimous decision among voters as he totaled 8.5 sacks for a loss of 58 yards and 47 tackles. Branch was also another unanimous as he had 50 tackles, six interceptions and three sacks. Burke rounded out the defensive First-Team recognitions with 42 tackles and three interceptions.

Freshman offensive center Christian Conrad, sophomore offensive lineman John Thierry, freshman wide receiver Zack Leets, sophomore running back Talaun Patton, freshman running back Saeed Galloway were all recognized with Second-Team offensive honors. Conrad and Thierry were a force against their opponents on the offensive line, while Patton was the leader in the conference with averaging 75.4 rushing yards per game. Leets had 34 receptions with seven touchdowns and averaged 58.3 yards per game and Galloway totaled 367 yards for the season and averaged 45.9 yards per game.

 Sophomore defensive tackle Noah Bias, freshman middle linebacker Nunu Tuuau, freshman outside linebacker Mark Gibson, sophomore cornerback Malik Welch rounded out the all-conference selections with Second-Team defensive accolades. Bias totaled 15 tackles and one sack during the season, while Tuuau nailed 15 tackles and had two sacks. Gibson had one interception in the crucial game against Riverside and averaged 3.7 tackles per game. Welch finalized the defensive honors with 51 total tackles, two interceptions and one sack for the Vikings.

The Vikings will return to the field next Fall.
