Vikings keep conference title hopes alive with 85-55 win over LA Southwest
The Long Beach City College men's basketball team kept its hopes for a South Coast Conference South Division championship alive thanks to an 85-55 blowout win over Los Angeles Southwest College on Wednesday night at the Hall of Champions Gym.

LBCC closed the regular season with an 18-9 overall record and 10-3 mark in SCC play. The Vikings will await the outcome of Friday's Cerritos College at LA Harbor College game. If Harbor can knock off the Falcons in Wilmington, the Vikings would earn a share of the conference title with Cerritos.

Freshman Elijah Gaines (San Pedro HS) came off the bench to lead LBCC with 19 points on Wednesday night while freshman Brandon Staton (Poly HS) added 18 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Kristien Owens (Wilson HS) also chipped in with 17 points.

The Vikings were up by 20 points at halftime (47-27) before an 18-4 run midway in the second half gave Long Beach a 65-33 lead with 10 minutes to play. The Vikings nailed 10 three-pointers on the night, including four each from Gaines and Staton.

Reggie Fields led LA Southwest (5-21, 2-10 SCC) with 15 points while Damon Horton had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

LBCC will learn its playoff fate on Sunday as playoff seeding will be announced on Sunday at the Southern California postseason coaches meetings.
