Men’s Basketball Powers Through Palomar in Home Opener

The Long Beach City College men's basketball team defeated the Palomar College Comets 87-81 in their home opener on Friday evening in the Hall of Champions. With the win, the Vikings hold a 2-1 record at the start of their season.

The Vikings came out ready for action as they were first on the board with a jump shot from sophomore guard Jace Bass. Bass blew through the Comets in the first half by scoring 13 points. Sophomore guard Kester Ofoegbu led the team also was on fire with 15 points to set the Vikings' lead 51-38 at halftime.

In the second half, Bass came back with 17 more points to ultimately lead the Vikings with 30 total points and Ofoegbu put up ten more as well. Sophomore forward Matthew Schmidt held his own at the rim as he totaled 12 rebounds and had five blocks against the Comets.

In the final minute of the game, Palomar started to close in on the gap as they were only down by three points. Bass made both his free throws followed by a jump shot with only twenty-two seconds left in the game to peel away from the Comets and walk away with the 87-81 win for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will return to the court on Thursday, Nov. 14 against Riverside College at 6 p.m.
