Hunter’s buzzer-beater lifts Long Beach to win over Compton

LONG BEACH – Shane Hunter's one and only three-point shot of the night was likely his biggest of the season.

With time winding down, Hunter nailed a clutch three-pointer at the buzzer to erase a two-point Compton College lead and give Long Beach City College a 73-72 win at the Hall of Champions Gym on Wednesday night.

The Vikings went into the final minute of regulation trailing Compton 70-68 before Chris Herrera's jumper tied it up.

Moments later, a technical foul by the Vikings led to a pair of free throws by Compton's Tyrese Merriweather and a two-point Compton advantage.

But LBCC was able to force a turnover on the Tartars' ensuing possession with just 22 seconds remaining. After a pair of Long Beach timeouts, Hunter took a pass from Kameron Mayhan and sank the game-winner.

Hunter totaled 15 points on the night. Bonard Johnson Jr. led LBCC with 20 points, Herrera scored 18 points, and Lorenzo Marsh chipped in with 11 points, 5 steals, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds.

The victory snapped a five-game Long Beach losing streak. LBCC improved to 13-10 overall and 1-4 in South Coast Conference South Division play. The Vikings return to action on Friday (Feb. 3) when they host Los Angeles Harbor College in a 7 p.m. SCC South Division game.
