Vikings Still Undefeated With Win Over LA Mission

The men's soccer team defeated the LA Mission College Eagles 2-0 on Friday evening and extended their perfect record to an eight-game winning streak.

Sophomore goalkeeper Andres Figueroa-Flores held down the cage in 79 minutes of work with two saves against the Eagles. Freshman goalkeeper Zachary White from New Zealand, made his debut by taking over for Figueroa-Flores in the remaining ten minutes and blocked a shot from LA Mission to earn the shutout.

Freshman defender Anthony Mejia and sophomore defender Julian Guerrero displayed top defense as the back line against LA Mission by blocking out their forwards. The Eagles only had four shots on goal, while the Vikings took 22 shots on goal.

Both sides were scoreless in the first half of the game, but then in the second half, the Long Beach offense started to get in gear. LA Mission fouled the Vikings in the 57th min of the second half which resulted in a free kick for LBCC. Freshman midfielder Ruben Menjivar took the free kick outside the left goal post and smashed a perfect goal kick into the Eagle's top right corner of the cage for the Vikings' first goal.

In the 68th minute, the Vikings received a penalty kick to a goal from sophomore forward Bryan Majano.

Long Beach City College men's soccer will play again on home turf in their first South Coast Conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 26  against El Camino College at 4 p.m.
