The men's soccer team defeated the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines 4-2 on Friday afternoon at the Viking Soccer Complex. Long Beach's defense was on fire as held down the Wolverine offense to only two goals.

Goalkeeper freshman Mario DeLaTorre was a force in the cage and had four saves against six San Bernardino Valley shots for the Vikings.

The Vikings were first to get on the board within ten minutes of the game starting with a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Ruben Menjivar to sophomore forward Steven Espinoza for the goal. The Wolverines struck back to tie the game 1-1 to go into halftime.

In the second half, the Vikings were ready to finish the game with the win. Freshman midfielder Sergio Flores slammed one in the back of the San Bernardino Valley's cage to lead the Vikings 2-1. Then freshman midfielder Angel Villalobos scored the Vikings' third goal with the assist from sophomore midfielder Carlos Maldonado.

The Vikings scored once more off a free kick from a foul with Maldonado bending the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net. The Wolverines were able to strike one more goal in extra time, but it wasn't enough and the Vikings walked away with the 4-2 win.

The Long Beach City College men's soccer team will play again at home on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.
