Vikings have five named to All-Western State Conference postseason team

Five members of the 2014 Long Beach City College men's volleyball team recently earned All-Western State Conference postseason honors. Sophomores Tim Davis (Lakewood HS), Dan Starkey (Fox Lake, IL), and Henry Taylor (Calvary Chapel HS) were first-team honorees while sophomore Ryan Boncuk (Poly HS) and freshman Alfonso Mata (Warren HS) were second-team selections.

From the setter position, Davis ranked second in the WSC and third in the state with 10.02 assists per set. He was also fifth on the Vikings with 68 digs and totaled 25 blocks.

Starkey, from the opposite hitter position, led LBCC and was fifth in the WSC with 3.34 kills per set. He led the Vikings with 12 aces and was also fourth on the team with 43 blocks.

Taylor at middle blocker was second on LBCC with 54 total blocks and also added 2.02 kills per set.

Boncuk totaled 47 blocks for the Vikings and Mata posted 126 digs.

Long Beach compiled a 15-5 overall record this season and finished second in the WSC with a 9-3. LBCC advanced to the postseason for the ninth straight year and saw its season come to an end with a 3-2 loss to Irvine Valley College in the CCCAA State Championship quarterfinals.
