Men’s Volleyball: Vikings sweep of Miramar followed by 3-1 win at Grossmont

Playing on consecutive nights on Wednesday and Thursday, the Long Beach City College men's volleyball picked up a pair of wins by sweeping Miramar in its home opener and getting a 3-1 victory at Grossmont to extend their winning streak to three matches.

LBCC cruised to the three-set win over Miramar, taking the match by scores of 25-10, 25-10, and 25-12. Freshman Travis O'Gorman (Northport HS/East Northport, NY) led the Vikings on the night with six kills as he hit an impressive .857 for the match. Sophomores Joshua Nehls (Warren HS) and Cesar Renteria (Bell HS) both had four kills while freshman Jordan Molina (Carson HS) led LBCC with nine digs.

Freshman setter Jayce Ashment (Highland HS/Gilbert, AZ) had a team-high 16 assists while freshman Gary Trejo (Warren HS) totaled 12 assists.

Thursday's 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over Grossmont should definitely be a confidence booster for the Vikings. The Griffins traditionally produce strong teams and last year advanced to the state championship semifinals.

Nehls had a huge match for Long Beach as he led all with 18 kills. Freshman Andrew Pearson (Huntington Beach HS) also played well, as he totaled 12 kill and a team-high 12 digs. Trejo led LBCC with 29 assists while Ashment totaled 13 assists.

Long Beach, now 2-2, returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 20) when the Vikings are scheduled to face Irvine Valley College and Orange Coast College at OCC.
