At the conclusion of the postseason, the Long Beach City College men's volleyball team saw five Vikings earn Western State Conference (WSC) – South All-Conference awards. Freshman outside hitter Cyrus Fa'alogo (Salt Lake City, UT) helms the award winners by being named the WSC-South Most Valuable Player. Sophomore outside hitter Travis O'Gorman (East Northport, NY) and sophomore middle blocker Elai Mama (Moreno Valley, CA) were named First-Team All-WSC-South recipients, while sophomore setter Gary Trejo (Long Beach, CA) and freshman outside Noah Taitano (Carson, CA) hauled in Second-Team All-WSC-South honors. Head Coach Jonathon Charrette was named the WSC-South Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive season as well.
Charrette has continued a dynasty of dominant volleyball by leading his team to yet another WSC-South Conference Championships. After winning a state title in 2016, the sixth-year head coach reached the 2017 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Semifinals Playoff round after sweeping Fullerton College at home in the quarterfinals. In the past two seasons, Charrette has posted an overall record of 37-6 which includes a 4-1 record in state playoffs. Additionally, he has gone undefeated in conference play for the past two seasons at a perfect record of 18-0.
After one season for the Vikings, Fa'alogo earns MVP recognition after dominating the WSC-South in numerous categories. After making the transition from setter to outside hitter, Fa'alogo paced the WSC-South in kills-per-set (5.08), kills (305), and hitting percentage (.368). Furthermore, he was ranked tied for fourth in digs with 97. Fa'alogo earned double-digit kills in all but two contests that he participated in conference. He earned 28 total kills in a four-set victory over El Camino en route to hauling in a WSC-South Conference Title. He hammered home 23 kills two games prior against playoff qualifier Santa Monica as well. Fa'alogo has committed to Division-I's Brigham Young University (BYU) – a top-10 program in Provo, UT.
O'Gorman hauls in his second-consecutive All-Conference honor in his season finale with the Vikings. He was second on the team in kills which ranked him fourth in the state with 177. He also ranked fourth in kills-per-set with 2.85 and 10th in blocks-per-set with 0.61. O'Gorman earned 25 kills in a five-set thriller against conference foe Santa Monica and backed up his performance with a 20-kill output at El Camino the previous week. Additionally, he boasted an impressive .688 hitting percentage in a three-set sweep over L.A. Trade Tech.
Mama earns his first-career All-Conference nod in the after acting as a brick wall at the net. Mama paced the CCCAA in total blocks with 82 while boasting a state-pacing 1.22 blocks-per-set. Mama went each conference game with at least one block. He earned back-to-back five stuff games in victories over El Camino and Santa Monica, respectfully. Additionally, he recorded 32 kills in conference leading to a 1.45 kills-per-set mark.
Taitano completes a strong inaugural season for the Vikings by earning All-Conference recognition as an outside hitter. The freshman recorded 26 total kills leading to a hitting percentage of .380. His largest conference output came in a 3-1 victory over El Camino were he hammered home 13 kills leading to a .375 hitting percentage. Additionally, he only made seven errors in 50 total attempts.
Trejo earns his second-consecutive All-Conference selection in his final season for the Vikings after hauling in First-Team honors last season. In 20 sets, the sophomore dished out 103 assists to average a 5.15 assists-per-set mark. His highest conference output was a 33-assit output in a five-set thriller against Santa Monica. He recorded 26 assists the game prior in a five-set victory over El Camino. Trejo has committed to attend California State University – Long Beach next season. They are the top Division-I program in the country.
