Softball: Vikings walk their way to 16-0 mercy-rule win over Compton

The Long Beach City College softball team drew a season-high 16 walks while freshman starting pitcher Frances Campoy (Santa Fe HS) tossed a one-hitter in a 16-0 five-inning South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College Compton Center on Tuesday at LBCC.

The mercy-rule win snapped Long Beach's two-game losing streak and improved its record to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Vikings took advantage of the walks to post big innings in the second and third innings. LBCC scored eight runs in the bottom of second after earning seven walks from Compton starter LaNita Leary. Along the way, Long Beach got a two-run double from sophomore Cassie Garcia (Banning HS) and a RBI double from freshman Melyssa Rivas (Santa Fe HS) to prolong the rally.

In the third, Long Beach added seven more runs thanks to seven walks and three hits. Sophomore Melisa Sponholz (Millikan HS) and freshman Sara Valdepena (Bellflower HS) kept things going with RBI singles.

LBCC closed out the scoring with one more run in the fourth after a sacrifice fly from freshman Christine Kennedy (El Segundo HS) allowed Rivas to come in to score.

Campoy (pictured) was dominant in the circle for LBCC as she allowed just a two-out single to Erika Avila in the top of the third. Campoy struck out six and walked none in the five-inning, complete-game effort to improve to 5-3 overall.

Leary earned the loss for Compton (2-5, 0-3 SCC) after allowing five hits, 13 walks, and 15 runs (13 earned) over 2+ innings of work. Melina Rubio tossed the final two innings, giving up just two hits and one unearned run.

Long Beach returns to action on Thursday (Feb 23) when it hosts LA Harbor in a 3 pm SCC game.
