Softball: Campoy fires one-hitter as LBCC explodes for 12-0 win over East LA

Freshman starting pitcher Frances Campoy (Santa Fe HS, pictured) fired a one-hit shutout and the Long Beach City College softball team banged out 12 hits in a 12-0 five-inning South Coast Conference win over visiting East Los Angeles College on Thursday at LBCC.

The mercy-rule win improved the Vikings to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the SCC while the Huskies dropped to 8-13 and 3-5 in conference play.

Long Beach put the game out of reach early, as the Vikings jumped on ELAC starter Janessa Martinez for six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Reanna Guzman's (Artesia HS) two-out, two-run double off the fence in left field was the big blow of the inning.

Sophomore Cassie Garcia (Banning HS) and freshman Lauren Alferos (Torrance HS) drove in runs with singles and sophomore Melisa Sponholz (Millikan HS) came in to score on an illegal pitch.

LBCC added three more runs in the second inning. Guzman added a RBI single, Sponholz hit a sacrifice fly, and another run came in on a passed ball to put LBCC up 9-0.

Freshman Sara Valdepena (Bellflower HS) hit a RBI single in the fourth, and Garcia and freshman Liz Melendrez hit run-scoring singles in the fourth to close out the rout.

Campoy struck out four and walked none in the complete-game effort to improve to 8-4 overall. Her lone mistake was a two-out single to Natalie Gutierrez in the top of the second inning.

Guzman went 1 for 1 with 3 RBI while making three great plays in the field at shortstop. Garcia had 2 RBI on a 2 for 3 day at the plate and Melendrez was also 2 for 3 with a RBI and two runs.

Martinez took the loss for East LA after allowing six runs (one earned) on four hits in just 2/3 of an inning.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Mar 9) when it travels to Santa Barbara City College for a 2:30 pm non-conference game.
