Softball: Long Beach hangs on for 1-0 SCC win over El Camino

Freshman starting pitcher Frances Campoy (Santa Fe HS, pictured) scattered three hits and struck out seven to help lead the Long Beach City College softball team to a 1-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College on Tuesday.

Campoy fired her second straight shutout and went the distance to improve to 9-5 overall while lowering her earned run average to 2.15 on the season.

After allowing a two-out double to El Camino's Alia Williams in the top of the third, Campoy went on to retire the next 11 batters she faced.

Campoy eventually ran in to trouble in the top of the seventh after issuing a one-out walk to Faafili Taamilio and a single to Vivian Santacruz. Jackie Peyrefitte followed with a deep fly out to right field. After the catch, freshman Karissa Reynoso (Bellflower HS) fired the ball back in to freshman Liz Melendrez (Banning HS) who stepped on second base. Pinch-runner Aisha Salami advanced to third on the play, but was called out for leaving early and the game was over.

The Vikings' bats managed just three hits as well off El Camino starter Marissa Merced. Long Beach scored its lone run in the bottom of the second. Freshman Shanise Compton (North Torrance HS) hit a one-out single and promptly stole second base. Two batters later, sophomore Melisa Sponholz (Millikan HS) delivered with a clutch two-out double to drive in the lone run.

Compton went 2 for 3 to lead Long Beach (11-10, 6-3 SCC) at the plate.

For El Camino (6-9, 4-5 SCC), Merced allowed one run on three hits and struck three over six innings for the loss. Santacruz went 2 for 3 to lead the Warriors' offense.

Long Beach is back in action on Thursday (Mar 15) when it travels to face El Camino College Compton Center in a 3 pm SCC game.
