Softball: Vikings close SCC schedule with 19-2 mercy-rule win over Pasadena

The Long Beach City College softball team used a 10-run, second-inning to cruise to a 19-2 South Coast Conference win over visiting Pasadena City College in both teams' conference finale. LBCC will close out the 2012 regular season with a pair of non-conference games at home on Wednesday (Apr 25) against Palomar College at 1 pm and San Diego Mesa College at 3 pm.

On Tuesday, the Vikings drew 12 walks, including 10 in the big second-inning. Long Beach added seven more runs off six hits in the bottom of the third to complete the rout.

The five-inning, mercy-rule win improved Long Beach to 19-19 overall and 13-8 in conference play to wrap up third place in the final SCC standings.

Sophomore Melisa Sponholz (Millikan HS, pictured) and freshman Melyssa Rivas (Santa Fe HS) both drove in three runs to lead the Vikings at the plate. Sponholz went 1 for 1 with a two-run double and scored three runs while Rivas was 2 for 3 with three runs scored.

Sophomores Danielle Hannan (El Segundo HS) and Cassie Garcia (Banning HS) also had two RBI each.

Freshman Frances Campoy (Santa Fe HS) earned the win, allowing one run and three hits over three innings. Freshman Christine Kennedy (El Segundo HS) tossed the final two innings, giving up a run and two hits with four strikeouts.

For Pasadena (9-29, 4-17 SCC), Kayla Moore had two of the Lancers' five hits on the afternoon. Moore also earned the loss for PCC, allowing 14 runs (10 earned) and nine hits over 3 2/3 innings.
