Softball: Vikings earn five All-South Coast Conference honors

Five members of the Long Beach City College softball team earned All-South Coast Conference honors at last week's SCC postseason coaches meeting.

Freshman Shanise Compton (North Torrance HS) was named first-team all-conference, while sophomores Danielle Hannan (El Segyndo HS) and Cassie Garcia (Banning HS), and freshman Frances Campoy (Santa Fe HS) were all second-team selections. Freshman Liz Melendrez (Banning HS) was an honorable mention pick.

In 19 conference games, Compton led LBCC with a .442 batting average and .721 slugging percentage. The right fielder/designated player smacked two homeruns and had 14 RBI.

Hannan, the Vikings' primary leadoff hitter and centerfielder, had a .371 average in 21 SCC games. She led Long Beach with 24 runs, 21 walks and 10 stolen bases. She was also perfect in the field with no errors.

Batting from the middle of the order, Garcia hit .362 over 21 conference games. She totaled 21 RBI and scored 17 runs. At first base, Garcia made just one error in 160 chances.

Campoy was impressive from the circle in her first season at LBCC. She led the conference with a 1.86 earned run average and compiled a 10-7 record in 19 games. Campoy tossed a no-hitter and had two one-hitters this season.

Melendrez led LBCC with 23 RBI in SCC play and had a .316 batting average. The middle infielder walked 19 times, smacked four triples and scored 21 runs.

Long Beach closed out the 2012 season with a 20-20 overall record and finished third in the SCC with a 13-8 mark. LBCC missed the playoffs for just the third time over the past 22 seasons.
