LBCC Softball Takes Down Glendale in Season-Opening Weekend

The No. 15 Long Beach City College softball squad kicked off its 2017 campaign by competing against Moorpark College and Glendale College on Friday and Saturday, respectfully, at the Glendale Sports Complex. Despite dropping their season opener in a close, 2-1 contest against Moorpark, the Vikings bounced back and took down Glendale by the final tally of 8-5.

In the victory on Saturday, the Vikings banged out 13 hits that saw eight runs cross the plate. Sophomore shortstop Amanda McCalip (Bellflower, CA) paced the Vikings at the dish by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored in the two-hole.

Freshman third baseman Alissa Cienfuegos (Carson, CA) backed her in the three-hole by recording two hits and driving in an RBI. Furthermore, she scored twice in the game. Freshman second baseman Alvia Soulliere (Paramount, CA) and freshman center fielder Cynthia Ruiz (Long Beach, CA) barreled two base knocks each.

Freshman hurler Vanessa Montanez (Lakewood, CA) was handed the start in the circle and carried Long Beach to the victory. She earned the win after tossing six effective innings en route to seven strikeouts.

The Vikings will continue action on Wednesday against Southwestern for their home opener. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
