Softball Brings the Bats, Defeats Cuesta in Five Innings

The Viking softball team took down the Cuesta College Cougars 10-1 in five innings on Wednesday afternoon at the Viking Softball Field. 

Pitcher Emilee Hoppe (2-0) got the win on the mound with only allowing one hit and no runs, while striking out six in four innings of work. 

The Cougars opened the game with a sacrifice fly to score their only run.  Sophomore short stop Alissa Cienfuegos homered for the Vikings in the bottom of the first to bring in sophomore outfielder Alijah Vega to take back the lead 2-1.

In the bottom of the second, Long Beach scored two more runs with an RBI single from Vega to bring in catcher Samantha Ontiveros, and then she was batted in by Cienfuegos to command the lead 4-1.

Freshman infielder Jennifer Tobar scored from a single by first baseman Julia Juarez in the fourth inning. Then to finish the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, LBCC loaded the bases and Tobar batted in Ontiveros for the RBI single. Cienfuegos was next up with a double to left field to ring in freshman third baseman Yliana Bernal and freshman right fielder Sabrina Rodriguez.

Freshman left fielder Raven Agapay finished the game with a two RBI triple to finalize the 10-1 victory.  

The Vikings totaled 14 hits for the game and had eight strikeouts. Long Beach City College will play again at home tomorrow, Feb. 15 against Chaffey College at 3 p.m.
