Softball Shuts Out Golden West in Home Opener

The Long Beach City College softball team defeated Golden West College 8-0 in their home opener on Tuesday afternoon. This is the Vikings' fifth-consecutive win to bring them to a 5-0 start to the 2019 season.

The Vikings jumped out the gate in the first inning and scored two runs by freshman center fielder Yazmin Zendejas and freshman third baseman Ileana Rivera.

In the second inning, freshman left fielder Maria Aguilar was batted in by Zendejas and then freshman catcher Jocelyn Cebedo hit a double to score in first baseman Ashley Pozo and Zendejas to bring the Vikings' lead to 6-0.

The teams were scoreless in the third inning and then the Vikings came back in the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple from Zendejas. Long Beach scored two more runs from Zendejas and freshman pinch runner Sabrina Perdomo to end the game with an 8-0 shut-out over the Rustlers.

Freshman pitcher Joette Vega (3-0) earned her third-straight win on the mound with only allowing three hits to the Rustlers, while striking out three.

The Vikings will return to action on Friday, Feb. 1 against LA Mission at 2 p.m. at the Viking Softball Field.
