Track & Field: Long Beach brings home seven top-10 finishes from Cal State LA Invitational

Facing tough competition from NCAA Division I, NCAA II, NAIA, as well as some of the top community colleges in Southern California, the Long Beach City College track & field team totaled seven top-10 finishes at Saturday's Cal State LA Invitational.

The Long Beach men had five top-10s, including a pair by sophomore Damond Burns. He had LBCC's top individual finishes, as he won both his heats of the 200 and 400 meters. His time of 49.78 was good for third place overall in the 400 while he was fifth overall in the 200 at 21.76.

Phillip Powell ran 1:56.69 in the 800 meters to finish fourth in his heat and sixth overall while Jarrod Amyx tossed the shot 12.47 meters to take ninth place overall. The Vikings' 4x400-meter relay team ran 3:23.53 to finish fourth.

On the women's side, Sherrice Pelle finished second in her heat of the 100-meter hurdles and was ninth overall clocking in at 15.68. Also, the 4x400-meter relay team finished third with a time of 4:14.39.

Both the Long Beach men and women return to action on Friday (Mar. 11) when the Vikings will compete at the Occidental College Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic.
