Last weekend, the men's and women's track and field team competed in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Finals at Riverside City College. The women's team took fifth place overall in the CCCAA Regional Finals.
Freshman Callissa Candalot's javelin throw of 34.42 meters in the prelims advanced her to the State Championship meet. Freshman Destiny Diaz moved from fifth to third place in the women's 3000 steeplechase. Diaz shaved five seconds off her preliminary time, and finished in the finals with a time of 12:14.19. Freshman Lyling Irwin qualified to move on to the State Championship in the women's pole vault by placing eighth in the finals with a three meter mark. Freshman Aazalet Danage finished second in the finals for the women's 400 meter race with a time of 57.78, and took off two seconds from her time in the prelims. The women's 4 x 100 meter relay (Destinee Augustus, Aazalet Danage, Vanessa Marchorro, and Cicely Arana) shaved .17 off their preliminary time and placed third overall in the meet with a time of 47.74.
For the men's team, sophomore James Martin moved from seventh in the prelims to fourth overall in the men's triple jump final with a jump measuring at 14.16 meters.
These athletes will compete again in the CCCAA State Championship and will be traveling to the College of San Mateo on May 17-18.
