Women's Basketball: Long Beach opens season with 60-50 win at West LA

Head coach Michael Anderson (pictured) and the Long Beach City College women's basketball team opened up the 2011-12 season with a 60-50 non-conference win at West Los Angeles College on Tuesday.

The Vikings led from the opening whistle and never trailed. Long Beach opened the contest with an 11-2 lead and held a narrow 32-27 advantage at halftime.

LBCC's shooting went cold in the opening five minutes of the second half as the Vikings failed to score, but Long Beach never surrendered the lead.

Sophomore point guard Kala Amico nearly had a triple-double in her opening game with the Vikings. The Cal State Dominquez Hills transfer posted 10 points, 11assists, and six rebounds. Twin sister Luna Amico also had a stellar opening night. The freshman Cal State Dominguez Hills bounce back scored nine points to go with nine rebounds.

Freshman Charmaine Nelson came off the bench and led Long Beach with 18 rebounds and 12 points. Former Long Beach Poly standouts Joanna Jaramillo had 11 points off the bench including 3 three-pointers and Toynell Williams had nine points.

Long Beach (1-0) returns to action on Thursday (Nov. 10) when it travels to Santa Ana College for a 5:30 pm non-conference game. LBCC plays its home opener on November 16 against Palomar College at 5 pm.
